3-Point Lift question

Hi there,

My 3-point is acting up and I was wondering about the steps to take in trouble shooting it. The symptoms are

The unit will lift and lower using the draft contorl with the position control in the up position.

The unit does not have enough lifting power to lift my son, 95 lbs on a rear fork unit.

the position control arm will not move the 3-point with the draft in either up or down position.

The lift pulses gently when lifting the arms with a very light load on them.

There does not seem to be a difference whether cold or warm.

The tractor is a 1974 MF40 industrial.

The tractor had some water in the transmission / hydraulic oil when I got it. I drained and replaced the oil.

Should I

1. Replace the filter on the pump unit.
2. Find out that I am using the controls in a wrong manner. (I spent hundreds of hours on MF65"s and a 285 back in my youth. ((1968 to 1976)) however, with my old age (51 approaching) I could be forgetting something.)
3. I did look at the owners manual, and think that I am trying to use the tractor correctly.
4. Should I check out the pressure relief valve. It could be loosing the required pressure.

Anyway, I would appreciate any information that anyone wants to give me.

V/R
Merlin

Hello, we are mere youngsters at 51!!!!
The filter is a good place to start. The hydraulic system should be similar to agricultural models. Drain the oil and remove the LH round side cover. Removing the filter is a little difficult but not impossible. You will see a wire going to the top of the filter body. Cut this and unscrew the top half. This will come out. The filter is under it. Gently work the filter free. The bottom cup will probably come with it. There is an O ring between the bottom cup and pump housing. Be careful as there a lot of sharp edges. Wash the filter in petrol or something similar and blow dry. If you can see any sediment in the bottom of the casing it would be worth flushing it out with diesel or similar. Catch and dispose of the diesel correctly.
With the oil out, remove the RH cover and check the operation of the pump lever and linkage. They should respond when you move the control levers.

It never hurts to replace filters and fluid. It is a possibility that there is something blocked in the filter if there was water circulating. I look at the change of fluids as cheap and preventing down time. Make sure you use the proper fluids for what you are changing. I am not sure on the unit you are working with, but see if there is a pressure relief somewhere. If there is, work the mechanism several times while running the engine. You could have a rested valve from the water that may free up a little. Otherwise, it looks like you will be doing some hands on work on the pump.
