I recently inherited a MF-65 gas.
(first "real" tractor) Currently it won't start. Installed new plugs, wires, rotor & cap. There is spark at the points(have not checked fire on the plugs yet)
It turns over good & strong but nothing. It seems to be getting plently of gas to the carb and I'm pretty sure I probably flooded it trying to start (saw moisture-gas?- around the threads of two of the plugs on the lower edge of the holes). I have also ordered op and service manual for it. Hope to get them soon. Can someone tell me a little more about theory of the ignition system, carburator(how it works and adjustments and also how the air filter system works. Is the air filtered thru an oil bath?? This is a great tractor and looking forward to getting it running again. Any advice, I'm sure would be helpful.
Many Thanks in advance!!! TP

Hi Tony,

65.. good machine I used one for many years

How old is the gas in the tank ?
If the gas is old (more than 6 months)
it may be unusable, even if you mix new gas with it.

If you are not sure drain the tank and put fresh gas. Frequent problem with tractors not used for long time.

Just an idea but if I'm right will save you $$$
If not return the gas in the tank sooner or later
you will have to put gas anyway.

Please let us know if you find solution
it will be helpfull for us and others.

Good luck

Joe Ferguson

I would suggest you check the spark at the plugs; my money says that it will be weak or inconsistent. I had exactly the same problem with my 65 gas recently. I changed the plugs, plug wires, rotor, cap, coil, and voltage regulator, and it still wouldn't start. It ended up that the condensor, which was only four months old, was shot. I put in another new condensor and it started first crank. You can pick up new points and condensor (they come together) for pretty cheap at a dealer.

You may want to replace the voltage regulator as well, since my dealer said it is possible that the condensor went because of inconsistent voltage.

I would suggest you also dismantle the carb and give it a soak and clean. I had some problems with mine, such as poor power at times and rough running. After cleaning the carb, it has run perfectly. These carbs are pretty simple; I had never done a carb clean myself before and I survived.

Regarding the air filter, it is an oil bath. You should give it a good cleaning before using.

Enjoy the tractor and don't be afraid to work it hard. Thats what they were built to do!
