I have a 1972 165MF. The box where the steering colum connects to there is a plug on the left hand side and a adjuster nut on the opposite side. Is there suppose to be oil in here. Right now there is none and when I turn the steering wheel it turns about a half revolution in each direction and the steering shaft and wheel moves up and down about a inch up and down. Is this okay also.

Oil yes, play, no. Takes gear oil. Ball bearings on top and bottom. Pull the plate and inspect for damage.

Should look like this...

Well... minus the brown goop. Tht was the old oil that had turned to varnish.

Good Luck,

Aaron

Hi,
When you adjust the box, find the 'high spot' in the straight ahead position. Adjust so that the steering just passes smoothly over this.

Could you explain how to make that adjustment a little bit more. Thanks for any help.
