My diesel 165 just lost power steering and I have fluid all over the front of the tractor. It happend pretty rapidly. I need to add fluid so I can see where the leak is.... right now i suspect one of the pressure lines by the way the fluid is thrown. I need to know three things:
1. My shop manual says to fill the resevoir with oil conforming to MF Specifications M-110 until oil level is even with the filler opening. Gee, that's helpful... what type of oil is that??? Can I buy it at an automobile parts store (no MF dealer near me). A specific brand and type is needed.

2. What is the most likely cause of steering fluid blown all over the steering cylinder area of the tractor (just front of the radiator). It is the top pressure line that I suspect right now where it seams with the metal tubing. I'll know more once i put fluid in it and take a look... but i'm interested in anyone else out there confirming they've had problems with these breaking. Where is the best place to buy them? 3. Is there anything else I should do since I have to fill it with fluid again? The shaft the main arm ties to moves some when i turn and the steering binds a little at the transition point from as it passes the point where the tractor is pointing straight. I've not figured out what is causing that.

Any help is appreciated. thanks in advance.

Same thing happen to mine. The hose had a worn spot where it was rubbing on a grease fitting. the grease fitting was on the top of the shaft that goes down to the tie rods.

The modern name for that oil is "PERMATRAN III" any oil jobber should be able to cross reference it for you.

I know that it's a fairly common spec but can't recall the number right now. It was posted on this list quite awhile back. (The 'generic spec' oil is often about 1/2 the price of the MF dealer I got mine 'on sale' and it wasn't too bad... I went in the next time and paid double ouch!)

When you refill, you have to add fluid to the resivoir then turn the wheel extreme left and right several times.... back to center... top fluid off.. turn several times... back to center check.. etc. until you get the level stable at the full point.

Added some pipe and fittings to my resivoir to make it easier to fill.

I will try to answer some of your questions. I have a MF 165 tractor and I have had some problems with my steering and have been sucessful in correcting the problems so far. The type of fluid to be used is ATF-either Dextron II or III. This can be obtained at any auto parts store. As for your leakage problem in front of the radiator, it sounds like you have a cracked hose. It is also possible you could have a bad seal in the power steering cylinder located in front of the radiator. As for the problem with a hard spot in the steering, sounds like something is binding in your gearbox. Power steering doesn't go bad in just one spot. Either you have it, or you don't.
Hope this helps. Good Luck!
