My father's MF 240's 3 pt arms won't drop under their own weight anymore. I have to stand on them and jump up and down in order to get them to lower. The hydraulics seem to pick up fine and they work fine as long as an implement is attached. What could be wrong here? Thanks.

Hi,
Have you checked the position and working of the Response Control lever. This controls the rate that the arms drop.

David , I have moved the response lever both forward and backward from center without any change. The liftarms will drop if a heavy piece of equipment is attached. The arms used to drop once the engine was turned off. Now I have to stand on the arms with both feet and jump hard to get the liftarms to drop . I don,t understand what has happened. I guess I,ll try changing the oil and cleaning the filter. It has MF transmission oil in it but it a litte milky. Thanks for any help. Robert in MD.

Hello,
Changing the oil will not help. Drain the oil to the level of the bottom bolt on the right hand round side cover. Remove the cover. You will see the operating lever coming from above and meeting the control lever from the pump below. With the engine stopped and the linkage down, operate the position control lever. You should see the pump lever move from the forward 'drop' position, through the 'neutral' position and into the rearward 'lift' position. With the control lever 'up' move the pump lever by hand so that you know what it feels like. Start the engine. With the controls up, the linkage will rise. Ease back on the pump lever slowly and you will come to the 'neutral point before the selected height is reached. Pass this point slowly towards the drop position. You can overcome the pressure of the vertical lever easily. CAUTION, your attached implement may fall suddenly. If you can raise and lower the linkage by manual use then that suggests that the control valve at least is OK. Let me know how you get on.
