I have a MF 65 that ran pretty good till the end of fall last year. I put in points, condenser, wires, plugs, cap, rotor and set the timing. After that I developed a backfire. I just went through it and checked all connectons for rust and corrosion. Cleaned the air filter and drained the tank for sediment. I used carb. cleaner to make sure nothing was sticking. It runs better, but still backfires when in high range climbing gentle slopes or when in 3rd gear with the finish mower running. If I pull out the choke a little bit it will smooth out. I am out of ideas. What else can I try? Coil? Carb. rebuild? I'm open to anything.
Sorry for the long winded post.

Thanks
Steve

Slat//Two thoughts head gasket starting to blow between two cylinders or intake valve ware from unlead fuel causing decrease in intake valve clearence which would create backfire through carb on hard pull.

I checked the wires against the firing order and all seems well there.

Did you by chance use auto type plug wires?? If you did that could be your problem, tractors need true wire plug wires not the ones made for a car or truck. Or you may have the carb set to lean which will also cause it to back fire

I bought wires for a tractor from my local farm and home store. Haven't had to put wires together since I was a teenager.

You also may ned to reinstall the old cap, I have installed a junk one that was supposed to be from a reputable dealer. Next one was a good one though. NAPA was good for it. Try the old cap and see if it clears up if more fuel does not fix it.

I was having this problem before I put on the new items. That is why I replaced them thinking something in the ignition was bad.

Besides Aaron's suggestion re: mixture, check your advance mechanism operation and check the bushing/shaft wear on the distributor.

Have you tried enriching the mixture? Sounds like you are running lean. Big screw on the carb elbow, should have a knurled head. Back it out 1/4 turn when she starts acting up and see if it clears up.

HTH,

Aaron
