I'm considering buying a local MF 245. The serial puts it as an '81, and it come with a loader, blade and mower for $5,300. The only major defect is the need for a new clutch, which has been estimated at ~$900 for parts and labor.

It's not in beautiful shape, but it otherwise seems solid and started up strong. Didn't check guages yet, hours seems to be ~12,500. Oil looks clean.

Basically, I wonder if this seems like a decent buy, and if there are any other red flags I should look for with this model.

Thanks - I appreciate any comments. Link goes to more pictures.

I would check the front axle pivot pin and bolster for wear with that loader on it. Also, it"s been my experience that with 2x 245s- total hours over 6000, that the power steering is the weakest link, esp. the tie rod ends and shaft seal. The parts from MF to fix are over $600 without labor. Search this page for "MF245 Steering" (top left box), and see what comes up. Otherwise they are as bulletproof as you can get. Looks like your RPM needle needs some attention;-)

Worn clutch is common on a loader tractor. Hours very well could be right. Lots of those tractors were used on smaller acreage and didn't pile up hours. Loaders are tough on front axle components. Check them too. Let's be generous and figure the mower and blade @$500. $900 for new clutch. You'de have about $5700 in a $5700 tractor that has a new clutch. Not a major bargain, but not all that bad of a deal if the rest of the tractor is alright.

Thanks - I'll definitely run through the checklist on it. Per the hours, the guage reads 2478.3, which I figured was too low not to have flipped once, but I hope you're right.

I'd beleive those low hours-

We've got a late 60's 165 that only has a little over 4,000 hours. Loader tractor for most of the 15 years we've owned it(don't know how long it had a loader before we bought it), and atleast the 2nd clutch that we've had put in it.

Our 285 just rolled over 6200 hours last year, original clutch, and just 2 weeks ago we brought it to the dealer for a major overhaul and a new clutch while they're at it.

There was just a new OEM tach for the 200 series massey's that sold on ebay tonight, and there are new light rings for them on ebay too. Listed under 165/175 light rings, but they're all the same in the 100 and 200 series for lights.

I'm not saying to trust the hour meter but the tractor doesn't look too bad. Does the tach work? There are a lot of smaller tractors around with relatively low hours because they are just used on acreages or as a utility tractor. If it is original hours it's a very good deal with the clutch installed. Dave

12,500 hours seems high. Are you sure about that many hours? I assume it's a diesel? If it is it's one of the best engines ever made. Same as a 135 but slightly more HP. Why don't you see if you can get it for $6000 with the clutchs installed. That way there are no surprises. If a dealer did the work they could go over the whole tractor. 245's are a good tractor. Way better than 235's mostly due to hydrostatic power steering. The MF loader is built pretty strong and should be quick attach. It sounds like a reasonably good deal without actually seeing it. Make sure everything works and when the clutch is put in you might want to get the rear seal on the engine done since it's apart. Big Dean has a checklist of things to look at. Dave

Just to add a couple more things. You should also ask for a full service including eng and trans oils. 1 question does it have auxilary hydraulic system to power the loader or is it a switch valve?

Thanks - Engine is definitely the Perkins diesel. Not sure about the bucket hydraulics - here is a shot of the controls if that tells you anything.

Need to see a pic of the rear of tractor just under seat if there is a large plate there and an extra control valve handle or 2 right beside the 3-point hitch controls(left of seat) it has aux hydraulic pump(internal)MF245 is a good machine. Gary

Gary - thanks for the info. Here is the best shot I got of the rear of the machine - not sure if that gives you the right perspective.

It might just run off the 3 pt. hydraulics and that's why it has the aditional 2 spool valve. My 135 is like that. Is there a selector valve on the inside of your right knee? If the loader is slow is another indicator and it won't work at the same time as the 3 pt. The position control has to be in constant pumping with the draft control all the way up. If the loader works with either 3 pt. lever down it would have a seperate aux. pump. Dave

A bit hard to tell but I am pretty sure it will have Factory aux hyd pump. I think I see 1 extra lever on the right and the supply and returns from the quick connects where they would be.
That will add value to the tractor! Very few 135's had factory auxillary remotes. These are much more common on the 245 or 200 series. Gary
