I just replaced the front seal in the main hydraulic pump and now the brakes, steering, seat, etc. work intermittantly. It seems to me that I am sucking air into the system somewhere and I can't figure it out. I didn't have this problem before I replaced the seal, just had a small drip that I wanted gone. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong??

The radial pump is a pressure pump and not a suction pump. It receives its fluid supply from the Charge pump via a regulator valve attached to the charge pump.A sensing line from the reg valve is attached to the radial pump. When flow is required at the radial pump the reg valve closes and fluid is supplied until the demand is met. I belive that you have crossed hyd lines at the pump. If you installed the shaft seal wrong you would have a very large leak.

The seal that you replaced can only go on one way. Ihope you had the special tool to install it on the shaft. If you didn't the seal may have gotten damaged sliding it over the splines. You stated that the steering, brakes & seat work intermittantly.Your problem may be the seal on the charge pump suction line. The seat is not run off the the main pump up front. It is run off of the charging pump that supplies oil to the front pump.Part # for that seal is 503531m1.The seal is found in the parts book under center housing.

I wish it was that one. That was the first thing I checked, hoping for an easy fix. I had to have put the radial pump seal in backwards. It is the only thing I touched before this problem started.

Did you face the new seal the same way the old one faced so that suction made it seal tighter?

I hate to think I did that. I definately know better, but cannot remember giving it any thought. If that were done wouldn't it leak as it did before, instead of sucking in air?

Some pumps need two seals. One to hold the oil in when its not sucking, and another the hold the air out when it is sucking. One turned each way. or a special seal designed for both directions.

If the single direction seal is turned to hold the oil in well, it will suck air badly. If its turned to hold the vacuum, it may leak oil at rest.

That has to be the problem. It is the only thing I touched. I guess I get to do it again.
Thanks.
