MF 35 3 point not working and diesel engine smoke

I will try this for the 4th time and see if it posts. I am looking at a MF 35 that is about a 6 hour drive away. the owner states "The three point needs work it either goes up or down, but there is no in-between adjustment." He says it is being raised by the draft control only. Any ideas on what could cause this? He also says thediesel motor runs fair, hard starting at lower temps but runs good enough for working, it always needs starting fluid to help start it. It smokes while it is cold. Which makes it sound as though it is going to need motor work, but is there anything else that might cause this on the 4 cylinder diesel engine?

The final issue is that it is "hard to turn at times and will probably need some work done in the future" I am guessing need to rebuild the steering box?
Any and all input is much appreciated, thanks!
thanks!

This sounds like a standard motor company 23c 4cyl engine.I have just rebuilt one here and it starts from cold on the key.It is most likely that the timing chain has stretched throwing both the camshaft and consequently the injector timing way out.Very shortly a dvd of how to rebuild and set up this notoriously difficult engine will be avaliable on our web site.

Any more questions no problem,

SO i might be able to just replace the timing chain to solve the engine starting issue? I went to your site and the info was not up yet. Since this tractor is reasonably priced and wouldn't see more than about 40 hours of use a year, it is of interest to me if it can be made serviceable without a lot of work.

Replacing the chain may cure the trouble but it is likely to need the injector pump drive gears re-adjusting/re-shiming as well .Setting up the chain is not straight forward as most of these engines were not supplied with timing marks.

Okay, i was concerned about it and you folks have pretty much confirmed my feelings. By the way, he wants $1600 for it.

Thanks

The below postings look are correct, unless it's being given away, run. The 4 cyl diesel is the Standard and starts hard on a hot day, let alone a cold one. Parts are a harder to find than the 3 cyl Perky. Stiff steering typically comes from bad spindles. Rebuilding these can be between 30-100 per side.

Unless you are really getting this one cheap, and would like to spend big bucks in refurbishing it, RUN. You can do better. I would not buy a Perkins diesel that the owner has been feeding starting fluid. Probably needs complete engine rebuild, lift rebuild, and steering rebuild; and you will probably find clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing ready to replace. Sounds like a real big project to me. Tom

Normally you want the draft control all the way up, then the position control works. If the draft control is down, the position control has no effect, at least that's how my 135 works. But there could be a linkage or sensor spring problem.

Four cylinder diesel? I though 35 and 135 only used 3 cylinder Perkins diesels. It could be that the early 35 used a Standard diesel from England that could be hard to find parts for in North America.

An engine given too much ether just once can develop an appetite for ether. That comes from shoving the rings down the piston from detonation of too much ether. So hard starting can be a hint of abuse and expensive repairs to come.

Stiff steering can come from a dry steering gear box or dry and worn spindle bearings or from a failed power steering system. Last I checked, the bearings for the steering gear box for my 135 were not available from MF because the thin walled Garlock bearings haven't been made in a long time. I turned porous bronze to fit my 135.
