Rough running

I have a gas MF 65. Last fall it was running really rough. I did a tune up, cap, rotor, wires, points condensor and set the timing. I put plugs in a few months earlier. It runs better, but if you are in third, sometimes, usually fourth or higher it sputters and spits. It pops some back through the air intake sometimes when doing this. If I pull out the choke it usually recovers as long as I keep it out.

What do I need to do fix this? I don't know where to go from here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Steve

I would agree that the high speed jet is too lean.

pull the center wire out of the distributor cap, hold it near a good ground and try a start. You shoud seea FAT, BLUISH WHITE SPARK. Ifyou don't check out the primary side of the ignition for bad connections, wrong point setting, bad key switch, dirty or corroded points, etc. Also check the runnout on the distributor shaft and bushing. It should be 0.002" or less. Get the points closed and then push from the side on the distributor shaft. You should see no motion. Check your initial timing and advance mechanism for smooth spark advance. You'll need a timing light and tach for this. If all this checks out(FAT, BLUISH WHITE SPARK),correct timing and proper advance, check the carb adjustments and fuel delivery to the carb.

What would the proper carb settings be?

There is no real proper carb setting since all engine run a little differant plus it depends on if you live on the coast at sea level or if you lie a mile high, both places take a differant setting of the carb. Slowly open the main jet a 1/2 turn at a time and then drive it around, keep doing that till you hit the sweet spot and its not putting out black smoke from the exhaust
