Hi folks. I replaced the safety switch on my Massey 35 yesterday and today the tractor was stuck in low and wouldn't come out. Managed to start it by just shorting the wires but i'll never get my work done running around in lo. Could it be the new safety switch that has caused it to stick???

The 'hi - low' needs to be in neutral when you install the switch.

I don't think that would be the cause of the problem, but I could be wrong. Normally it's a problem that can be fixed by accessing the shifter rails through the filler hole in the top of the transmission. Search this board for STUCK IN GEAR and you'll find lots of advice of exactly how to take care of it. Big Dean also has this outlined on his website as well.

Hi, BB is on the right track. Normally being stuck in second is cured through the oil filler hole. Slacken your starter switch and see if you can move the hilo lever. Release the brakes and rock the tractor see if the lever becomes free. (Is main lever in neutral?)

David, you must add to this that people has to fix it on increasing tide, not when it is lowering. Very very important. Never do anything important as fixing a MF gear lever, shaving, or slaughtering on low tide... bad luck.

The main lever is fine and will select any gear. Neither lever has ever stuck before which is why i suspected the safety switch as it was just fitted the day before and i understand (perhaps wrongly) that it is the high low lever that activates or deactivates the safety switch.

is it possible to access the hi-lo lever from the gearbox filler hole as is usually done when the main lever sticks

In THAT case it could very well be the safety switch. The HI LO shift lever does activate it, and the normal problem with the shifter hanging up is with the gear selector lever itself. The simplest thing to do is to begin with the item you "fixed", which broke your tractor... Does that make sense? I'll pull that safety switch and see what happens.

Just to let you know. Removed the new safety switch on Saturday and hi-lo lever moves fine now. Decided to try screwing it in partially until it began to jam the hi-lo lever then take a quarter turn back. My plan was to fit thread-lock to hold it in this position and silicone round the top of the switch to prevent any water ingress. However the tractor would not start then even when in neutral so have had to take the new switch out and just fit the old one that is broken and short the wires. It could be that i have the wrong switch
