has anyone changed the filter in power steering unit? my fluid was milky and I tried to pump out all the bad fluid, but there is still some gunky old fluid and metal present. the power steering impoved a liitle when I changed oil but is still not 100 percent. I bled it good as required. I suspect the filter may be clogged and gunk in bottom of pump housing. Is there an easy way to clean out pump reservoir and perhaps change filter? I don't want to rebuild the unit, since the steering aint too bad. Also, ever add fluid to pump housing? Do you add 90W oil to the set screw on side of top housing?

My 135 Perkins gas has the round can with a 1/4 inch pipe plug filler. I"m sure it"s the same as your diesel. Remove the pump from the engine, take the round can off, replace the filter and o-ring, re-install cover. While you have the pump off, replace the shaft seal. This can leak and you won"t know it as all the power steering oil goes right into the engine. My manual says use the same fluid as the transmission and dfferential. You"ll have to get the filter at your dealer or on-line - you won"t find it at a parts store.

Hello,
I believe that there is more than one type of pump fitted to the 135. Most UK ones have a 'kidney' shaped housing. The filler plug is on top and the casind at the rear is held on with about 6 small screws. If this is the type you have then it is worth removing the complete pump before trying to remove the cover. It is only held on with a O ring but they can be very tight. Once off the filter is readily accessible and should be readily available from your MF man. Probably a waste of time trying to source one anywhere else. You mention putting 90W in the system. That oil is incorrect. In the UK, Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is correct but I understand that there may be a different oil specified on the other side of the pond. Perhaps someone can clarify this to your location.
Cheers
DavidP

My 1968 MF 135 manual says ATF type A or non foaming hydraulic oil. I'm running ATF type A but I've not looked at it in years since rebuilding the power steering cylinder and control valve.
