HELP!! I need a head gasket for a Pony. N62 engine, just like the G Allis Chalmers. I had the engine bored, but the machine guy milled the top of the block. Now the pistons come past the top of the block! I think I need an old type copper head gasket, if there's one out there. Do ya think 2 regular head gaskets together would work? Thanx yall

Hi Richard

I do'nt remember this engine...but...if the combustion chambers in the head are concave it may habe enouhgh room for the piston tops.

I had similar situation in the past..I put the head at its place on the block (no gasket) I turned the engine with the hand crank to see if pistons hitted the head...no...I screwed few head bolts on thighted by hand and turned the engine with the starter (no spark plugs in)..no knocking sound. I went to auto parts and asked for the thicker gasket... they had a thick sandwitch looking gasket looks like aluminium gasket with some stuff in between.

I installed the head and started the engine at idle and slowly increased de RPM no knock. Done light work.. then harder no knock. I noticed that the engine had few more HP.

I use premium fresh all the time gas to avoid carbon accumulation on top of pistons.

It worked for me...your situation may be far different.

My 2

Hello, I know this is a bad situation for you but your rebuilder should have known better. He obviously took off way to much material. First how much does it stick up? I'm not crazy about the 2 gasket route, Make your own 1 thick one. There may be enough material off the top of the piston or recesssing the head to give enough clearance (Last resort). THis all depends on how much clearance you need.If you decide the copper gasket route make your own you can get sheet copper from Mcmaster Carr or MSC supply

Good Luck

Richard, Which ever way you decide on this you'll be fine . If it ends up say up to .060 or even alittle more you wont notice anything different. These are low RPM engines . I am wondering how much clearance you lost please post what your findings are.

Keep us informed to how you make out with this once you get her running.

Thanks for your suggestion. I'll find out how much clearance. I thought about milling the tops of the pistons, but I wasn't sure about it. I also thought about the head, and that may be the safer route.
Thanx for your help.
