Hi group, Ive got an '82 MF40 industrial (new to me) and its leaking oil from the brake actuator, where the pull rod goes into the rear axle. Just curious what im going to need to fix it, as well as what im going to see and need to do when im in there. Also, on the 3 point hitch, the top center linkage connects to what looks to me as a hydraulic in/out cylinder. It doesent move in or out by any controls, but when you lower the implement and the weight is on-or-off it, it moves in-or-out just ever so much. Can somebody explain what its for and is it supposed to be powered in-out.

Thanks a bunch,
Pete

Pete it sounds like you may have the 40B tractor is yours a 4cyl or 3? 40B had wet brakes (better)
The sound you hear may be the from the pump being in "constant pumping" if you are moving the inner quadrant control lever all the way back this is the constant pumping position. There should be a notch or stop before the lever gets all the way back so that you must consciously put the pump in constant pumping (knocking sound)

Pete,The draft control is a large spring inside the cylindrical housing, it has a steel rod inside it and a mechanical linkage which is connected to the levers which activate your control valve on the hydraulic lift pump. the noise you can hear when lifting the 3pt link is normal, i have heard it described at it,s worst as chewin a mouth full of marbles lol. thats normal and i wouldn,t worry too much about it. i suggest you buy a good set of manuals and they will make life a lot easier. there are two dowels that fit on either side of your hyd pump to steady it in the housing, i have found these broken in the past and it might pay to check them. regards and good luck, sibby.

Pete, The oil leak is a rubber boot, it slips over the pullrod and seals oil in the brakes. it should be retained by 3 bolts on the axle housing. undo the bolts and remove the adjusting nut and the boot and housing shoud slip off, the boot will be tight on the rod. drain some tranny oil first or park tractor with the leaking boot side up on a slope or block of wood maybe. The cylinder you describe on the linkage is your draft control assembly, it has a spring which senses weight or force on implements when in contact with soil and regulates sensetivity of hydraulics and depth of attachments to stop overloading or stalling of engine. hope this helps. cheers from downunder, sibby.

Sibby, Thank you for the insight. So the draft control is a sensor of sorts, but does not actually have a mechanical action of its own. Please allow me ask a bit more, when I raise the 3 pt, i can hear just a bit of "popping" or "grumbling" or even "binding" (all to describe the same sound) in the rear end of the tractor, still very strong lift, but i can almost see that the noise has something to do with the 3 pt pump. Use it till it fails, or do i risk grater damage.

If anybody has a parts blow up for this model, or even a generic general blow-up diagram, it would be very helpful for my understanding of the internals of a tractor rear end.
