I posted a couple of days ago a question on the rear planetary of a 255 MF. Today a called several MF dealerships and got a wide range of answers.

Already being online and too lazy to get the phone book i searched a dealer locater on the MF website. It returned about 20 dealers in 4 surrounding states. Getting not so friendly service from a local dealership and having free long distance a decided to go down the list until someone could help me.

The basic question was if the rear planetaries on the 255 was sealed off seperate from the main housing and required seperate fluid.(according to Big dean some of the earlier 255's were seperate and i think mine is a '75 model)

The answers i got were interesting at least.
Out of a total of about 12 calls half said the planetaries were seperate and half said they were together. Some were "experts" that didn't have to look in a manual, some were not. Of course one of those "experts" after assuring me that ALL Massey Fergusons are all one unit told me he didn't work on those OLD tractors when i told him it was a '75 model. Maybe he didnt pick up on it when i said 255 six times. A couple told me 90 weight gear oil no exceptions.
The different answers went on and on.

Its just funny that Big Dean can read a couple sentences off a computer and tell somebody how to fix it with no problems. But anyway after all this i've forgotten where i started..... how do i change them spark plugs again???

Allis, Massey and Ford are the ones found on most small farms here in East Tn. I was about 12 yr. old before I heard a deere pop. Funny how these young kids think that anything older than 10 years old is old and they can't or don't want to work on them. Most of them are so lazy that unless you lay it out in front of them, they won't even go look for a parts manual.

Try getting help with what i run, 1960's & 50's stuff. Not that I can't afford teh new, I just have other priorities and also liek to work on the old stuff. Oh, well all I really wnated to know was how to change the oil
