i am looking at either a to 35 or mf 35 to buy. It is "pretty rough" but the price is low. The serial number plate is gone so i can't find any info that way. It has a 4 cylinder gas engine. There are a few oil leaks. The inspection (or adjustment?) plate on the bottom of the bellhousing that is held in place with 4 bolts is removed, and the area has a fair amount of oil around it. THe cotter key in front of that appears pretty new, and that area is dry. Any guess as to where the oil is coming from? does this mean the clutch is already soaked with oil? I read big Deans site for what to look for, but does anyone else have any advice? Thanks in advance!

Got:

Is it thick oil like 90W transmission oil?

It is not uncommon for these tractors to have have worn transmission input shaft seals or, worse yet, worn input shafts, causing transmission oil to leak from the inspection cover at the bottom of the bell housing.

If so, the oil will eventually get onto the clutch.

Thanks Dean. I found out today that it is an Industrial model, has the 3 point and pto, not sure if it has the dual clutch. HOw hard is it to change the seals? do you have to split the tractor to do it? I will give the oil the smell test since nothing smells quite like 90 wt. HOw expensive is it to fix a worn out input shaft? Should i just assume that if the seals are out that the shaft is worn out? or is it just as likely to just be the seals?

Thanks Dean, I have not had a chance to look at it more in depth, found another one that i am looking at as well. I couldn't reply because i forgot my password, and emailed the "powers that be" for instructions, never go them so i just had to get a new "name" and start over. Didn't want you to think i didn't appreciate the help.

Thanks again.

Got:

You must split the tractor to change either the seal or shaft, and there is no way to know which it might be until you do so. The seal can be bought for a nominal cost but I expect the shaft, if available, is expensive. I have heard that some weld the shaft up and turn it down so it may no longer be available. If simply grooved where the seal rides you might be able to repair it with a speedy sleeve.

Good luck.
