Hi there,
It is a late 1970 model.

I think the canister you're talking about is brake accumulator. If its on the RH side in front of the fuel tank, that must be it. It's purpose is to keep pressure in the brake system when engine is not running. Very vital on these tractors since brakes work off tractors main hydraulics.

Greetings,
another MF 1150 owner

this thing looks like it has been added it holds about 2 gallons of oil and is hosed into the oil filter housing and back into the base of the engine with a huge metal lift out filter in it im sure its an oil filter but Why? i havent seen it on any other to date or in the shop manual. Question is do the 2 standard oil filters pereform the task and if so why would anyone add this?

I would've suggest its an oil cooler of later type used in 540 and 640 Perkins engines. But they are smaller than 2 gallons so I don't know.
