I have been getting lots of oil in cyl 4 (the one closest to the rear of the tractor) I seem to foul up a spark plug in a few hours of running the backhoe. There also seems to be a bunch of oil around the threads of it, as well as dripping down the side of the block on the spark plugs side. It does not seem to come from any higher then the spark plugs. Any thoughs on where it might be coming from?

Thanks!
~Brian

If the Z134 is anything like the Z129( and I think it is), the oil supply to the rocker arms comes up through a drilled passage at the rear of the block, passes through the head gasket and upthrough a drilles passage inthe head and to the rear rocker support. With regard to the plug fouling, it's possible that it's leaking in the head gasket area and oil is getting sucked in on the intake stroke. Is the breather blowing a lot of gas?
You can also have a worn intake valve guide and/or stem seal that's allowing oil to get into the cylinder.
Having said that, have you checked the compression? It's possible that the water jacket is not getting enough cooling flow due to scale in the water jacket and you have inordinate wear on that cylinder. Check the compression with the engine at operating temperature and a wide open throttlwe plate and unrestricted air filter. A new engine is around 120-130 psi it should not be below ~ 85-90 psi and no more than 10 psi between cylinders.
With regard to the oil leaking down the sides., what's the condition of the valve cover gasket? Is the valve cover tightened down? A lot of external leakage can occur as a result of a bad gasket or a loose valve cover.

I will take another good look at it tomorrow (pending weather) and see, but it didn't look like any of the oil was above the bottom 1/2 of the spark plug sockets. So the valve cover gasket would leave me with oil above the plugs for sure. I have not done a compression check yet, but I will try and get that done some time soon. It's a great machine, I just need 2 weeks of work from it, then I can make it run like new (in the new shop it's digging a hole for :)

Thanks for the tips!

Another thought! The pushrods comeup from the cam though those metal tubes between the upper and lower part of the head. There is no pressure on the oil at that point other than gravity head as it drains to the sump. Is it possible that some oil could be draining out of there?
