The pto on my 1200 articulated tractor will not stop when disengaged, It works fine in gear with no slipping but when I knock it out it continues to drive light machinery (crop sprayer , fertiliser spreader) it stops when heavier loads are attached. Could the whole ipto unit be at fault or just the pto brake? I think the unit is the same as MF 178/188

Hello Nigel,
The MF 1200 is essentially two MF188 rear axles joined by an articulation linkage in the middle.
If your IPTO drive is OK then the fact that it will remain turning under light load is almost certainly due to the brake pad. In order to remove the IPTO unit the tractor has to be split between the gearbox spacer and rear centre casing, or in your case the centre casing and artic linkage. It is possible to replace the brake pad by removing the hydraulic cover. It is a bit difficult but it can be done. The brake cylinder should be checked at the same time or do a 'proper job' and replace the cylinder and pad.
Look for wear on the drum part of the unit. A deep groove will prevent the pad making full contact.
Cheers
DavidP
