hello, i have another question. i have a 35 massey diesel with a two stage clutch. the tractor had been sitting in a barn for 2 years, and had not been moved or started in 2 years.when you are driving the tractor and try to depress the clutch to stop. the clutch will not release. if you work the clutch pedal up and down a few times while moving forward it will finally release. seems to release better at low throttle versus meduim or higher throttle. is their a simple fix for this? or do i need to go ahead and plan on a clutch replacement? any help would be very appricated. their also is a very small amount of rear end oil leaking from the hole around the bell housing area. it does not matter how long you run the tractor, 1hr or 5hr the amount on the ground always looks to be the same. this is probally a seal or a gasket?

Just like Roger I've got the same sticking clutch problem on my MF35. It is now fully depressed and no bouncing on the pedal will release it. I've never split a tractor so would appreciate any advice. So far I've removed the small plate with 4 nuts below the clutch housing in an effort to identify the problem is there anything I can try before splitting eg. high pressure Steam, releasant, physical percussion etc. ?

By the way I live in North Wales (UK) on the banks of the Menai Straits. Grateful for any help advice.

Hello Roger,
I do not think for one moment that you would be looking at a clutch replacement unless of course it was worn out at last date of use. Bearing in mind the time that the tractor has been idle the problem is more likely to be rusted splines on the clutch plate. It is necessary for the plate to slide up to 1.5mm in order to clear. In pressing the pedal several times I think you are creating a 'springing' effect which is just allowing the plate to clear.
Clearly this is a safety issue and needs to be rectified. Splitting the tractor is not complicated but you do need a basic mechanical knowledge and a reasonable selection of tools plus a trolley jack or means od supporting the rear of the engine.
If you decide to go ahead I will be quite happy to talk you through the procedure.

roger...no problem, glad to help. i hope you get that clutch problem taken care of as easily as the hydraulic trouble. it sure is nice when it's nothin' major ain't it? by the way, i'm over here on the left hand side of the state, 'bout twenty miles south of lexington. where in the right hand side are you located?

you picked a good source of info in david...i know he'll be happy to help you out like he does all the rest of us. i wish i'da known about you and your hit/miss engines about a year ago. i had a neighbor that was big into them, but he couldn't find anyone around here that was all that interested, so he moved back to new york state last fall.

take care, mike

mike, i live half way between knoxville and chattonoga. the town is called sweetwater and i am pretty lucky because they have a tractor and engine show about half a mile from my home 2 times a year. so it is real easy to take alot of engines to show .plus here in east tenn. tractor& engine shows are almost every weekend during the summer. so it is real easy to load the trailers and try to make all the shows i can. the pride and joy of my collection is a bessemer 21hp oil field engine. it only weighs 5,800 LB. can't pull it with a toyota pickup !

Hello both,
Let me know a day or two in advance so that I can send you a list of bits needed to do the job. In my ignorance over this side of the pond, what are 'hit and miss' engines. Are they single cylinders or something else?
David

roger...as david said, splitting the tractor isn't that tough, but if you do i want to give you one word of warning. remember the front axels pivot in the middle of your tractor. just jacking and supporting up the rear end of the motor isn't good enuf. you have to support it so that it can't "roll" on the front pivot. if you've never done anything like this before, let david talk you thru it so that you won't run into problems and a possible unsafe situation.

have fun and be safe,
-mike

Hello Mike,
You are absolutely right. I always use wooden wedges and drive them between to axle and axle casting. It is absolutely essential as the whole thing is totally top-heavy.
Cheers

hello to you too david,

how's the weather over there? nice here, in the 70's. ya...i learned the hard way about the right way to support my TO-20 when i split it to replace the clutch. it rolled, front end shifted, front wheels turned hard to the left....it nearly went over all the way. i slapped myself up side my own head for being so stupid, which luckily, is the only injury i sustained. good thing a 20 is a reasonably small tractor. no need for anyone else to end up slapping themselves silly for being as dumb as me, when there's a forum like this right?

Hello Mike,
Nice and sunny here today but one of the driest winters here for years. Still quite chilly though.

hey david...just got our power back on. had some really heavy thunderstorms here last night, lightening musta hit something. they say the worst of the storm is still on it's way...hope not. i had to think about the "hit and miss engines" myself. if i hadn't been exposed to them thru my old neighbor, i wouldn't have figured it out either. i'm sure he's referring to the old engines with the big flywheels that were powered by gas or fuel oil or coal oil and used to work all kinds of things like grain grinders and water pumps like the hand pump kind you used to see inm peoples yards, and all kinds of other things i can't think of right now because i haven't had my "tea" (coffee) yet. the "hit/miss" part is because they worked off of a governor type set up that would spark, turn the engine over and over with the weight of the big flywheels til it started to slow down, then the "governor" would make it connect again and spark (i'm pretty sure off of a magneto) starting the process over. i know this is a pretty weak description so i hope you've already seen one of these engines to know what i'm talking about. my old neighbor had some working old ones, and also would make his own using old compressor bodies. they really were kind of fascinating to watch. if i could afford more than one hobby i might even tinker with them.

have a good day,
-mike

Hi Mike,
Thanks for that. It makes sense with what Roger said about his engine weighing 5800lb. I think that there may be something similar over this side of the pond used on old motor bike engines called, I think, 'knock-up' timing. Never done anything with bikes so not at all sure. You mention that you have a storm coming. Do you have any warnings about disconnecting the telephone and electric cables to your computer? We lost a modem a couple of years back due to and overhead storm but fortunately no strike.
Regards
David

david...when i was writing you, the first part of the storm had passed. when the second part hit we did shut down and unplug the computer, even tho we have surge protection on it. thanks for the heads up tho. looks like our bad weather is all over now. i just worry about all those folks out west of here that are getting smacked all over again.

i've seen those engines in all different sizes, so i suppose one could have been put on a motorbike...why not?
