Hello, just purchased a 35 massey diesel 3cyl perkins. my question is, the 3 point lift is very slow about raising. the fluid is dirty looking and when the lift is raising,it has a lite jerking motion to it. but it will lift a 6ft yard box and the 5ft bush hog that i have just purchased. it is just a little slow about doing it. never have owned a tractor before, any help would be greatly appricated.serial # on tractor is 246753 wondering what year it is ???

roger...you have a '63 MF 35. dean is right, there is a screen filter in your hydraulics that you probably need to clean, and since you're gonna have to drain the oil anyway, you might as well change it. to do this you'll need to pull both plugs on the lower left side of the chassis, one about straight down from the seat, the other down from the steering wheel. these are magnetic plugs so you'll want to clean them well b4 replacing them. you'll find the filter inside the circular plate on the left hand side, that has the PTO control lever on it. remove the six(?) bolts that hold it on and when you take it off, look inside to see how and where the control lever connects to the PTO gear inside so that when you put it back on you'll know how it fits in there. if you tip the top of the plate back a little you will be able to see inside. reach inside and down, and find a wingnut that holds the filter screen on. it might have a thin wire on it to keep it from coming loose. remove this wingnut and carefully remove your filter screen assembly in one piece and clean it. now you'll want to clean out your gearbox. i've heard several ways to do this, i used kerosene. you want to make sure you have all the sludge removed from the bottom of the gearbox. after you get it as clean as you want it, replace the filter screen, replace the cover plate making sure you have the PTO lever in the right position in the "groove" on the PTO gear. (you might have to slide the gear back or forth to be able to align the control lever if you have moved it when cleaning out the gearbox) replace the plugs and refill your gearbox with eight gallons of straight mineral oil. your massey or agco dealer should have this as M1103 SAE90, or NAPA carries it as GL1-90.*note, the first five or so gallons will go in pretty easily, but after that, ('specially if it's cold) take your time and let the oil flow thru the gearbox or it will overflow from the filler hole and make a mess on your shop floor.

one other suggestion...if you plan to do all your own maintainence or repairs, order yourself some manuals, either from this website or thru your massey dealer. i guarantee you'll be glad you did. i refer to mine all the time.

hope i've helped you out..

-mike

Excellent reply! I'll be cleaning the screen in my own 35. But, I'd like to extend the discussion a bit to my own 35. Mine is about the same vintage (63 or 64), 35 Deluxe, Perkins diesel.

Mine is slow to lift, but more aggravating, doesn't stay up, unless I rev the engine higher than I might otherwise. On the advice of somebody in this forum, I replaced the main cylinder seal a couple of years ago, and it seemed to help, but has now gotten even worse. I've replaced the seals on the vertical tube just under the cover plate, and have bought a replacement check valve, but so far have been intimidated to tackle replacing it. The tube seals stopped the annoying leak on and around the top plate.

Question...is there anything other than the check valve (and cleaning the screen as described in Mike's post) that I should do? I will do both of those this spring. I hay a few acres that has sprinkler risers all over the place and have to lift the sickle over each one, so don't really want to go through another season with it like it is.

Thanks!

Hello Chuck,
You mention that the linkage is going down when it should not. Does it go down slightly and then come back to its set position then sink, then rise etc?
If the above is happening then you have a leak in the system. You refer to a 'check valve' I assume that is the control valve on this side of the pond.
This is unlikely to be your problem as it only directs oil, it does not shut the system. There are 4 poppet valves (similar to those in an engine cylinder head) that allow oil to be drawn into the pump blocks and then pumped out to the main cylinder. In the neutral position oil is 'pumped' back to the transmission. Any load on the system is held by the poppet valves. I suspect that you have one of these valves leaking (firing on 3 cylinders). The linkage will drop until the position control linkage orders the pump to return it to the set position. If you are sure that the main piston sealing is good then is is the most likely other cause. Would be happy to talk you through the job.

David...no. it doesn't oscillate. Suppose it is up with a load. If I throttle back, or shut off the engine, it sinks. If I am lifting a load, I have to throttle up higher than I would have expected, and in fact, more so than I remember when I first bought the tractor about five years ago.

That brings to mind another question...is it normal for the load to sink when I put in the clutch? It does, though it's a two stage clutch, and when I only put the clutch in a little, it doesn't go down as long as the RPMs are high enough.

I was told at some time in the past that the check valve might be the problem. The check valve is a one-way valve that lets oil through on one direction but prevents back flow...is that what you meant by "control valve"? I don't have the manual in front of me (out in the barn) so can't check the exact terminology and part number.

Does that help any?

Thanks!

Roger:

If your 35 is a very late model it probably has a suction screen on the hydraulic pump. Since you say the oil is dirty, I expect that the screen may be partially clogged.

I would change the oil and clean both the sump and screen, if so equipped, before doing anything else. Use the correct MF oil when you do this.

By the way, if it is cold outside, the lift will be slow until the oil warms up, especially if your tractor is equipped with a suction screen.
