Help!
First, does anyone have a hint on removal of the steering wheel on the 135? There are no holes to mount a puller. I have remoned the nut and washer and can see a key slot so I assume the shaft is tapered not threaded. I have soaked the shaft with Breaf-Free and WD 40 but it still doesn't give.

Next, I have oil leaking out of the steering column. After I get the steering wheel off, what is probably the problem? The steering column is not loose.

i am wondering if anyone out there can tell me how to find the year of my tractor when it has no serial number plate or anything else. it is a 135 massey ferguson with five gauges, power steering, two fuel/water separators, high and low range three speed plus a black lever on right side of dash that is supposed to give six more gears but doesn't work, no lights front or back and one clutch that does two jobs. any comments would be appreciated. cypress

I have changed the steering wheel on a 35 before and it wasnt changed from new and had seen a lot of weathering but if you get two people with you to put upward pressure on the wheel then put the nut on three or more turns and hit it down towards the ground this should release it. hope this helps pierce

Hi Jay - your e-mail didn't work. So here goes again!

Power steering or not? UK or US? (Different steering box. US will have
delco electrics, UK - Lucas or CAV starter and headlights with bulbs, not
sealed beams, in plastic shrouds half way down the grill.)

Can't tell the year from that number. Is it stamped in the top edge of the
block over the injector pump? The 135's I've seen have the engine number
135 UA ###### on the right side, just ahead of the fuel pump.

The earlier engines had it over the injector pump, but were 18##### and
19#####.

Steering wheel - a bitch. We mickey moused 3 3/8" straps 4" long to fit
under the spokes, three bolts up to a 3 leg puller. Straps overlapped at
ends, bolt through both straps. Half the time the wheel fractured and had
to be replaced. Not too bad, though, $60 or so Cdn. Taper and nut well
greased on reassembly!

Non-ps models, and UK power steering models, have no oil feed to the box.
The only way oil could rise is if water is getting in, and pushing the oil
up. Water can get in if the shroud under the steering wheel leaks and lets
water run down the column. Internal parts are EXPENSIVE, if there's water
in there, clean it completely!

Do not disassemble the lower worm assembly on the column - whole mess of
balls in there, and I'm not sure a mortal can reassemble it! You may be
able to clean it by removing one side of the box and flushing. We replace
the gasket with silicone caulking. If you pull the side off completely, the
gears need retiming - I have the MF manual which describes the sequence for
the US model.

US Power steering - there is a seal in there which can let oil up.

Big Dean may also have ideas on the problem, as well as a better way to get
the wheel off - drop him a note if you haven't yet.

Hollar with more questions.

Jack

Jack, I think you are right. The shroud below the steering wheel and around the steering column is crumbling and broken. The tractor was out in the rain the day before I noticed the oil coming out of the column. What do I do??

Thanks

Jay

Hi Jay -

If you can stop the leak without taking the wheel off, (or keep the tractor out of the rain!) the wheel won't have to come off.

Bearing adjustment appears to be ok, from your comment about tight steering.

But... the water in the box is serious. You may be able to drain it by loosening one side or the other of the box, prying out 3/8", cleaning out the guck as best you can with a spray wash, then re-sealing and refilling. Haven't done it that way - stripped ours down by peeling everything off and removing side plate.

Strongly suggest getting an I&T or MF shop manual to help see what's in there - will save the cost in possible broken parts and frustration!

Good luck!

Jack
