Here is the deal I just finished rebuilding a F-162 continental for a 101 jr. and when I fired it up yesterday there seems to be alot of the coolant coming out of the exhaust. I thought I took all the right precautions when assembling this motor. I took the motor out of an older tractor that the transmision had gone out on. The motor never spit a drop of water out of the exhaust before so now why would it be. Could there a gasket that I missed when putting it back together.

Did you removed the bolts/studs that hold the intake manifold on? Sometimes the holes for these bolts are drilled through to the water jacket and they need to have sealant put on the bolts before they are reinstalled.

Yes, Joe I have also thought of this, but there is a gasket between the stud and the exhaust port making it impossible for water to get into the exhaust. Thanks for your input!

Need more info as to what kind of rebuild you did. Did you use a complete rebuild kit? What brand? Replace sleeves? Tom

J....y'mean like yer head gasket? did you tighten your head bolts down in the right order and make sure they were torqued right? did you have the head checked for cracks and straightness b4 you put it back on?

Yes, I did torque the head in the right sequence and I torqued it to 75 ft pounds. I just took off the intake to see if there was coolent in any of the exhaust ports and it appears that there is some in each one. The next step I think is pull the head back off and see what is going on. I checked the head for straight before I put it together. Also, like I said the motor never leaked before so I can't beleive there would be any cracks. Thanks for your input! Any other sugestions!

J...you're doing the right thing by pulling the head back off. i'm not that familiar with your engine but i assume it has wet sleeves. if it does and you changed them out, make sure they are all the way seated and not hung up and sticking up above the block so that the head won't pull down tight. also, since you have the head off you might want to take it in somewhere and have it checked out. it may appear to be straight but that's really hard to tell on your own. even the smallest bit of crud on the top of the block or stuck to the head can cause them to leak, make sure they're very clean. and you might want to try checking the surface of the block itself for straightness. good luck, i hope you can solve your problem easily. i know it can be very frustrating to do all that work just to find you have a problem, but stick with it, you'll figure it out.

There are no sleeves on a F-162. Does any one have the torque specs for the head. I would think if the head was warped or cracked that you would not get coolent in all for exhaust ports. The rebuiled that I did was honed the cylinders and put in new rings and had the valves ground. I did not do anything with the crank becaused it all mic'd out o.k. I also replaced all the gaskets.

Pulled off the head yesterday and could not find any sign of leakage. I am going to bring the head in to be checked to make sure it is straight or has any cracks.

Well here is what has happened. I took the motor and the head into get checked everthing was o.k. So I put eveything back together and fired it up early this morning and guess what? Whater started spitting out of the exhaust!!! I am so pissed!! I talked with the guy at the machine shop and he said that I should see bubbles in the radiator when it is running and I should be getting water in the oil. No bubbles and no water in the oil. As you can tell I am getting very discouraged and about ready to throw in the towel and put some stop leak in and be done. But, I like to do things the correct way. I rebuiled about 2 motors a year for myself and other people and have never had these kind of problems.

Don't take this wrong, but are you sure it is water and not gas??I have a 260 and 277 that will do that in cold damp weather until you get the RPMs up and clean the engine out. Some turbo diesels do that and is called wet stacking.I know we are talking gas here but I think it is maybe the same thing,THE only thing mine seem to hurt is messing my glases up,just maybe look at that possibly, hope maybe this helps.Good Luck.
