Those Continental engines were all the same for that series of engine block called the F400 block. Anyways, there is a thimble shaped cup welded near the top of the dipstick which is the stop as well as the protective dust cap which slides over the cylindrical stem into which the dipstick pushes into. The distance from the top stop (the inside top of the thimble) to the bottom of the dipstick is 9 5/16 inches. From the top stop to the full mark is 7 9/16" and from the top stop to the low oil mark is 9 1/8 inches. I'm going out into a back shed tomorrow and looking, I might have one here for you. Oh, one other thing. This one I am measuring is missing the small leather or felt washer that rests inside the thimble near the top stop, it would be the thickness of a regular piece of leather I would think. This one has been picked out but I know other ones I've seen have them in place. I don't think it would really make too much difference in reading the oil level whether it was present or not.

Didn't get back to you yesterday. Can't seem to locate the one I referred to. Anyways, sounds like you have a good handle on making one. Good luck with the project ..... MIKE
