So far I have resisted buying a diesel tank and pump for my MF35 because I figured the fuel would get stale or damp and cause more problems than its ready availability would solve, but running out of fuel and killing an expensive starter last week have changed the equation somewhat.

If I anticipate 200 hours of operation per year, what size and format of tank/pump should I get? Should I order different fuel for winter and summer?

In the yard there are still a couple of the old cylindrical tanks my dad had back in the seventies. The hand pumps are seized; they're probably corroded inside, and I think they held too much fuel for my needs.

Opinions?

Thanks,

Rod

another possible consideration would be to use an older 250 gal home heating oil tank and keep it topped up with the 5gal cans. You might also try to find a local dealer that sells the coloured fuel and save some tax money. A lot of folks have had to replace their perfectly good home heating oil tanks in order to satisfy the insurance company. You could then apply all the good advice given about keeping fuel fresh and winterized. Gary

The standards for on farm tanks in Ontario have gotten to be a real pain. I've got a 1000 litre tank, that the fuel company won't even fill up anymore, they want to sell me a double wall, vented fuel tank and promise to buy 1500 litres a year and from no other supplier. I have been using the plastic can route and buying my fuel at CTC or Mr. Gas in Smiths Falls, and the odd time driving the tractors into town for a fill up at the pumps. Another pain. What I hope is now the final solution is , I bought a truck mounted fuel tank (250 litres ) at TSC and will haul my fuel in that, I'm going to use a hand pump for now, but will upgrade to a 12 volt pump when I can affford it. Tanks are on sale this week at 40% off, my tank cost around $500.00 on sale. There was a smaller tank , about 150 litres for less money. I have had little luck using old drums and got tired of heaving fuel cans over my shoulder to fill the tractors.

Thanks for the tip. 150 litres sounds like a good size. I'll take a look at TSC.

My diesel fuel supply consists of a clean 55 gallon fuel drum that I got from my local fuel dealer ($20), a hand pump & hose ($120) and a fuel filter ($30).(You reallly need to have a fuel/water filter for a diesel.) I have to fill it 4 times a year for my ranch use of a Ford 4610. In the fall, I mix #2:#1 diesel in a 2:1 ratio and add an anti-gell additive. To fill i put them in the pickup and take them to the gas staation and fillthem. I use a chain and a drum lifter on my loader to lift the barrel out of the truck and place it on the storage deck.
If you have some tanks that held diesel before, check them out. They usually don't rust unless they had a lot of condensate in them.

The tanks might not be corroded. I have a 65 gal. slip tank with a hand pump. When I used to clear snow with my skid steer it came in real handy in the middle of the night. You don't have to fill it completely and someone told me that diesel fuel is good for about 2 years. The filling stations change fuel for different times of the year. As long as you add some winter diesel to the tank, you should be fine for the winter. Gas goes bad a lot sooner. Dave
