I am repairing a head gasket leak on my 65 (LP). While I have the head off I am goint to have it checked for cracks and warpped. I have noticed that there is not any valve stem seals listed for this. Do I need to replace the valve guides? Any info is appreciated.

You are already in this deep, go for it. Head job on a G176 head runs about $250 including parts. I only saw small o-rings on the valve stem when I got mine back. I am not certain but I think the valve guide serves as the seal. The o-ring just keeps the oil from running straight down. My head was tanked, milled, painted, ground, and assembled for $175 and I had $75 in parts. That included guides, springs, retainers, seals, and valves. Purrs like a kitten.

Cheers,

Aaron

JJ: I checked the compression on my LP 65 today. 3 cylinders ran 175# and one ran 100#, so I guess I will need a valve job. I don't think those heads had umbrellas. I know the old Allis Chalmers did not. They needed the oil to run down the valve stem to oil the guides.
