Anyone ever use automatic transmission fluid in your loader and backhoe hydraulic systems? The owners manual for my MF 220 backhoe suggests automatic transmission fluid type "A" be used to prevent seal damage. What kind of oil do you use in your hydraulic systems? Does it need automatic transmission fluid if that is specified in the owners manual? What would be an adequate substitute? Thanks in advance for your comments.

In a kinda related way, our Olivers all say to run ATF type "A" in the Hydra-Power and Over/Under units, but now it is just fine to run a hydraulic fluid in them and White started doing it sometime after the name change. I would still go with something like MF Perma-Tran III though for something like that.

Type A now translates to the Dex/Merc III stuff.

I can't say either way, but for our Massey's I thought they originally came with ATF in the steering, but now they say to run hydraulic oil to prevent seal troubles.

I'd use what the manual says. Different oils require different seals. Dave

With an internal hydraulic pump running $500 each, do you want to experiment?

My older MF uses a MF specific specification hydraulic oil for the transmission and the internal hydraulics, but uses ATF for the power steering. My JD uses wet brakes and the wrong oil eats the brake pads after it makes them noisy. The wrong oil there gets very expensive with the brakes inside the planetaries.
