I'm restoring a 1955 - TO 35 that my Dad bought new in 1955. It hasn't been off our farm since. I have the motor out right now and am in the rebuilding process. I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions before I'm done but lets start with paint and sheet metal. The pictures that I see of old TO 35's all have green and gray paint. I want it to appear original, but I think this tractor was red and gray originally. Is that possible? I need to know exactly what paint to buy and exactly what parts of the tractor to paint what color. Also, the side panels of the hood assembly are rusted out at the bottom and need to be replaced. Also need a grill. Any ideas for sources on these parts?

Hey Tx Mack, where in Texas are you? Because I am restoring a 1956 TO35. Would like to see how close you are. I'm in Lubbock.
Best of luck,

Terry

Hi Terry,
Just a little south of Dallas at Ennis. Supposed to pick up the motor from the machine shop tomorrow. Hope to start going back together this weekend. I think I have just about all the parts gathered up. Some from the internet and some from a salvage yard in Pittsburg, Tx. called Pittsburg Tractor. They're also a Massey Dealer. I found out there's almost no place to stop once you start on a project like this. I am looking forward to seeing it all come together sometime soon.

the fella are right. Jump over to the other ferguson site--tell us your ser. # on your dash and we can tell you the year and the colors. If it is a 1955 (and since it was in the family-you are probably correct) it is green and grey.
They started in 1954 (only made 4) and then all of 1955, and most of 1956. They experimented with a beige and grey color scheme and an extremely rare beige and green. Eventually went with Red and Flint grey after the merger with Massey Harris. There were not red and grey fergy's in the first couple of years.
Again, tell us your ser. # and we would love to tell ya all kinds of STUFF about her. If you go to the tractor photos on left column and got to "Ferguson" and then type green and grey--there will be some nice pics of this combo. The original green was actually metallic and was very sharp. See ya on the other site. Mark

mack...a '55 to-35's original colors were grey sheet metal, and a dark forest green chassis. they're known as "green bellies" i was sure this had to be wrong myself until i did what someone told me to try on my own '55 to-35. i carefully scratched thru some of the grey paint that was on my chassis, and lo and behold, there was that dark green paint underneath. there are guys on the ferguson forum that can give you the original paint color numbers if you want them. they might also be able to help you find the pieces you're looking for too. good luck on your restoration.

Mike, You were absolutely right. There is dark green paint buried beneath layers of gray. Looks like I've got my work cut out for me.
Thanks, I may be contacting you again.

hey mack...i might not be the right guy to get in contact with if you're planning to make yours an original "green belly" again. my '55 TO-35 is red and gray also, and i plan to leave it that way. like i said before, you'll find alot of guys that know more about those colors on the harry ferguson forum.

i don't know if you know it or not but you really are in the wrong forum for your tractor. the TO-35 wasnt called a massey ferguson until around 1960. your tractor is a "ferguson" TO-35. i don't know the exact history of the 35, but in 1953 or 4, i think massey harris called on old harry ferguson to design them a tractor with live PTO and a six speed tranny to compete with a ford model that had come out with those features. harry designed the TO-35 for them, but even tho it was sold "thru" massey, it was a "Ferguson" tractor until it was named, "massey ferguson" in 1960. this is kind of a rough history cuz i don't know all the details, but it's something like that.

if your 35 still has the "badge" on the nose, or the emblems on the sides, you'll see that it says ferguson on it, and is different from the "MF" badge you see on later to-35's. oh...and if you carefully scratch thru the paint on that badge, you'll find that dark green as a background.

there are quite a few disscussions about the colors. there are SO many early fergie 35's around that sport that red and gray, that alot of people still believe that some of them were originally painted that way. i've only seen one older fergie with the original paint (not repainted) that was green and gray ...and that was in a picture. ALL the others i've ever seen are...red and gray. i have my own theories about that but can't prove it. i wonder if massey dealers had a hard time selling that tractor in it's green and gray coat...so they took them new, into their shops and painted them red and gray, or ordered them or sent them back, to the factory for the massey colors to be put on them? oh...the '60 MF-35's WERE red and gray. the '57 and '58 fergie 35's were beige color sheet metal, and i forget what color chassis. you said your dad bought your tractor new and you remember it as always being red and gray. if he brought it home from the dealership red and gray...that would kind of back up my theory. is there anyway you could confirm that? it could also save you alot of color changing if you could say for sure that it WAS originally red and gray...from the dealership anyway.

hope i helped you a little,
-mike

Thanks for all the info Mike. I'm going to see my Dad tomorrow. I'll find out for sure about the color this tractor had from the dealership. You could be right about the repaint at the dealer from the start. Dad will be 81 this year but his memory is better than mine! If this tractor was ever green and gray on our farm he will know it!

mack...i forgot to answer one of your questions. if you go to the top of the massey ferguson forum page and look at the bar under the forum title, there a box that says "show all forums". click there and scroll down thru the forums. you'll see the MF one you're on now and right below it is the harry ferguson forum.

by the way...those side panels you said you need to replace are referred to by alot of guys as the "doglegs". that's great about your 81 year old dad! i hope he stays that way for another 81 years! i wish my dad was still around...he'd love the life i'm living now. he didn't make it past 59...way too young. have fun with you paw while you can...

Thanks again Mike. I'll investigate the Ferguson forum. Had a good visit with my Mom and Dad this afternoon. They live on our home place about 30 miles from where I live. They are pretty sure that the TO 35 was gray and green when they bought it in 55. They couldn't say exactly when the red paint went on but it has been painted a few times over the years. From what I've been able to find out so far, those "doglegs" and the grill are kind of hard to come by. Maybe I'll get lucky.
