i have a great uncles MH 30 that my brother an his son would like to restore with my dad as that is something 3 of three of them can work on together, my question is how available are the parts for this engine. its a 162. this tractor is a basic case. valves rusted off in the head. i think the pistons are still there under all that rust. but he wants to do it. it will be good for the 3 of them also. gives them all something to do together, brother an his family live in town. any idea of massy salvage yards or such to start with, would helpful. i think it might be best to just find a complete engine. that is not in such bad condition.
i do john deere this thing has to many cylinders.
thank you all for your time

I rebuilt my fathers MH 30 in 74. It had a cracked block so I picked one up in a used yard (field) in Nebraska. It was buried in the mud for who knows how many years. Hot tanked it and bored for 10 or 20 over (I dont remember). New, old block was missing a main bearing cap and I was told that using a different one would require line boring. I just gauged it (ok) The tractor has been running ever since (play work) It was the easiest rebuild Ive done. At the time new parts were easy for that engine and I would guess they still are.

Have Fun

I had the same issue with a 102JR. Machine shop wanted $900 to clean, bore, replace valves, and install bearings. I purchased a good running 101JR with an F162 on e-bay for $800.00 and had lots of extra parts. Late model 101JR and 102JR used the 162, so there are running parts tractors out there if you are patient enough to wait for one.

I have a parts engine out of a 30. It ran ok but had a knock in it till it blew #2 piston out of it. Yep #2 piston is gone as in blew up completely and that was where the knock came from.

Valves are in the block in the 162, not the head. That's a side valve (flathead) Continental engine in there. Same engine as in the 124 and 140 cubic inch versions. Lots of stuff had those engines in the e 3 various sizes. All kinds of ag applications, Lincoln welders, industrial applications, etc. Lots of parts available but can be expensive, but what's not expensive these days? That is a Massey HARRIS engine right? I was just wondering why youy said the valves were rusted in the head.
