MF 65 dual clutch. Was out pushing snow and she quit on me, right in the middle of the state road. The shifter is in high range (back toward me), but the tractor won't move. The shifter will move up to the nuetral till I can feel a detent, so the rail must be moving, but won't go all the way up into low. I'm thinking either a busted fork (Please, no) or the set screw loosened and the fork slipped.
Is the best way to get in there to see by removing the top cover, can I see the fork and planetary enough to service it? Gonna be some blue fingers around here. Hate doing this stuff in the winter, but I got to have the tractor running.
Thanks.

The two speed planetary is bolted to the back of the transmission to access it remove the liftcover under the seat. The planetary has a splined ring pressed in the hub it is common for that ring to come out of the hub. Once you have the liftcover removed you can see this. I suspect that is your problem I have pictures with instructions on them for repairs to the Planetary if you will email me with an address where to mail them to I will send them to you I am only online for about 20 to 30 minutes few times day most days because of my health so I spend most of that time trying to catch up on my email.

Thanks Big Dean. Glad to see you're feeling some better.
That's exactly what the problem was. Pulled the lift cover, and was very happy to see the main shaft coupler pin had busted, and the coupler shifted back and disconnected the main shaft. Real easy fix. Judging from how stout the shaft and gears are, I would bet not much else goes bad in there, as long as you keep the lube up. Didn't even get blue fingers. Wind stopped, sun came out, and it even got above 20 degrees!

I read your post a bit closer. The pressed in spline in the hub was just fine. All I needed to do was replace the coupler pin. I could see how easy it would be to service the planetary without splitting the tractor though.

Servicing the planetary does not require splitting the tractor. You can get to it through the top cover(under the seat).

There is also a set screw on the shift rail under the shift lever. Access to it is had by removal of the steering column plate. I would be surprised if your problem was one of the set screws unless someone has been in there before and did not reassemble properly. They should have safety wires on them.

You say the tractor will not move. Does this mean the back wheels are locked up or will the tractor just not go into gear? When the tractor stopped, had you been trying to shift it or did it just stop on its own? Please let us know what you find.

You cannot get to the hi/lo unit through the top cover, you will only get to the bottom of the lever and the front part of the shifter rail, its detent, and its spring. To remove the rail or to get to the unit and its selector fork requires a rear end split. I havent seen Big Dean posting of late, I know he had been ill at the end of last year, hope he is not badley again, does any one know how he is?

I think we're miscommunicating here. By top cover, I meant the hydraulic lift cover, not the steering unit. Looking at the diagram in the service manual, it looks like the fork and planetary mechanism is actually in the rear differential case. I was hoping I could at least see if it was a fork problem without splitting the tractor.

Hi,
Gotcha, It is a lot of work to go to for no potential gain. If you listen very carefully and move the range lever you should hear what is or what should be happening. I hope that Eric in France does not mind me borrowing his photo to illustrate what you can see and how little you would be able to do if you removed the hyd cover.
Will try and post it.

Hi, seems like part of the site is missing when there are no replies from Big Dean posted. We assumed that he may not be well and send our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Definately looks like a 'cold finger' job above.
