I got the VDO tach I bought off Ebay, turns out you have to have a sending unit for this particular model, and it's gonna be more trouble than it's worth. I'll just put it on the shelf for later. Looks like I'll be giving Denny's a call.

What model was it? I may be interested if it is a Series One. The sending unit can be purchased fairly resonably. If it was for a gasser, the tach should wire right up to a coil. Diesels can get a signal from the alternator/generator.

Here is an installation manual.

Unfortunately, the back of my tach doesn't have any of those hookups. It's a marine tach. The part number is 337-012. It has 2 hookup terminals on the back, one is marked "-", and the other is marked "G" , and it has a small adjustment screw for ?. ( Not sure) If your interested, I gave 59.95 for it on Ebay, you can have it for same, plus shipping. I was under the impression that it was a universal fit for gas engines, obviously not the case. I can e-mail a picture if you like. Or, look up VDO Marine Tach 337-012 on Ebay for an identical picture.
