Hello gentlemen,

Few months ago, I posted a message to be helped about my MF178. When using tractor with hard load (for example with a round baller when ball get enough big), PTO may stop running.
Your advises were to open lid and check oil filter.
If not, may be pressure could be too low.
As I have no work for few days, I opened today transmission lid.
But I don't really understand how to check filter.
I took a picture of transmission (see link attached).
The arrow points a part that looks as a cyclinder with a small bar across. It was held in place with a small part of "iron wiring" (is it the good word ??). It seems there is another small filter just close to it.
But how to reach it ? There are plenty of pipes and only few of them seem easy to be removed.
Thank you to help me.
Regards.
Eric (France)

Good evening again.
I finally removed the main up shaft (to rotate wheels) ans pipes also.
It was not so complicated in fact.
I found 2 filters, one Nr 1 in a bowl (I think this one is for the lift pump which is on the right side of the trans) and a second one Nr 2, not circular rather rectangle, which is directly visible and freely plunged into auxiliary pump by its bottom (the one on the left side). Filter Nr2 seems clean. But I found a bad point : a tubing comes from the auxiliary pump to the PTO on/off valve, to provide pressured oil I assume. One of its nut was at least 1 turn loosen, tubing was moving easily inside nut. So pressure should get lost at this point.
But I still have a question : the PTO ON/OFF valve is fitted to a part which looks as a barrel (PTO discs inside ?). This assembly is not firmly fit in place to the body of the trans. Because of this "play", nuts of pipes may get loosen.
Does anybody knows if this "play" is normal or not.
Thank you for helping.
Eric

Bonjour Eric,
Votre anglais est tres bon!
You are correct, the filtre cylindrique is for the Ferguson pump (3-point linkage)and the filtre rectangulaire is for the auxilliary pump. The pipe between the pump and IPTO unit supplies oil under pressuref you have a leak here you will lose PTO power. Tres bon!!
The IPTO is fitted on a dowel/peg (cheville) in the side cover. This allows a very very small amount of movement which the pipe can move with.
If you have more movement here check for wear on the cheville or wear and possible breakage in the IPTO body(corps).

Hello David,
Thank you very much for your quick answer.
I have checked again tubing today.
I tried to put it back in place but even when screwed, tubing may move slightly. May be this movement is normal.
In fact, this tube has two ends. The one which is fitted on the pump has a classic connection using a nut pushing the shaped end to a shaped seat. All parts are metal.
On the other connection (to the on/off PTO valve), an oring is located between nut and tube end which is slightly flat. Even when nut is fully screwed, tube may move a little.
I'm afraid that this may leak at high pressure but now I'm not sure.
To answer your suggestion, I found the pin which is located to the left side cover. All seem OK, the play is not important. When I push and pull all PTO mechanism, it moves about 3 millimeters.
Now I have to check with a dealer to be sure this connection is a normal one.
As you appear to me as a specialist, I have few questions :
- I would like to remove auxiliary pump filter. But when I try to push it down, it bump onto the bottom of the trans. Shal I remove pump to do it ? Please find pictures at the adresse www.gite-herault.com/MF178.html
- As lid is open, I should check the most I can before to close it back to be sure I have found the good answer to my problem. Should I check the discs system or is it too complicated to do ?
- Should I check presssure through the lef side cover porth. Shall I close cover to check it.
The bad point to close lid (except its weight) seems to insert correctly the 3 points lift tube to go inside its hole on the pump (to provide pressured oil I assume).

Thank you very much again.
Best regards.
Eric
