You may have seen my many posting on this site. I am new to the tractor world and made an apparant bad decision on a MF65. It forsure needs a head gasket and/or a cylinder head. If you blow air with an air compresser in the second spark plug hole it bubbles the antifreeze in the radiator. Does anyone know if this indiciate a cracked head? Anyone replaced a head? If so did you replace or repair the cracked head? How much do you think this will cost to repair? Thanks so much... this is an excellent forum.

I purchased this one with no brakes, bad differential bearings, bad rear seals, busted hydraulic pump, belly full of water, bad spindles, pivots, front wheel bearings, junked motor, busted gauges, rusted out seat, junk steering wheel, and car tires on the front. The clutch, starter, tranny, rear tires, and body were okay. Professional rebuilding of the head alone cost around $250. Parts came from this site. G176 head is not prone to cracking. Head gasket is a pressed copper design. Mine needed resurfaced. See a slideshow of the resto at www.myspace.com/expensivejunk HTH Hear it run here.

I am not an expert, but if it were me, I would pull the head and take to machine shop. They can magnaflux it a check for cracks. Have them work it over if no cracks -- grind valves/seats, guides, seals, check springs, and shave the head a few thousands to perfect flat. Others can tell you what to check on the block after you pull the head. Tom

That engine is not prone to head problems. Follow Tom's advise.

Is your tractor gas or diesel? If diesel, is it indirect injection (vertical injectors) or direct injection (angled injectors)?

If the head isn't cracked, you might get off easy with just a head gasket, and maybe machine the head mating surface if it's warped too bad. New gaskets should run 50-100 dollars, and around here grinding and checking a head runs about 125 dollars. If it is cracked, contact Wengers of Myerstown, Pa. They should have a used head for a decent price. All in all, you probably didn't buy a lemon, it just feels that way right now. When you're done, it should still last another 40-50 years if well cared for. I look at every tractor purchase as an investment, no matter the condition. Their values have nowhere to go but up.
