I'm cleaning up an old 1958 mod 65 (LP gas) I bought last fall. I had to pull the head to fix a leaking head gasket. (Water leaking between # 2 & 3 cylinders). The head is full of sludge! I'm thinking of pulling the oil pan to clean out the sludge in it and around the oil pump pickup tube. Is this something I need to do, or can I get things clean by changing the oil a few times after I get 'er running? Any Suggestions? Thanks JJ

Amen to the previous post. My 65 gasser had the suction screen full of ..... insects. Flies, bugs, grsshoppers and many others were interred in my suction screen. While you have it off, you might consider slipping in new bearings or at least rebuildig the oil pump. I would definitely pull the pan. It's not that hard.

If you have a high speed connection, check out my myspace page. I have a slideshow that has pics of my engine when disassembled.

If ya have any questions, post 'em and folks here are pretty good at sorting them out.

JJ//pull oil pan clean screen and pan other wise the crud you can,t get will wash down into pan clog screen.I have seen many a good engine blown by a cloged screen even if oil pressure looked good.
