I just bought a MF 50 A 300 series backhoe that has 3500 original hours on it that has been doing a lot of sitting.Ir runs like a watch and doesn,t seem to have any major oil leaks but am having trouble getting it to move in both directions.I adjusted the two r&F pedals to try and get them to both work but haven,t been succesful. The control rods work thru a fairly heavy spring and are not ridged ,so I guess the idea is to have some built in lost motion,Question is how much throw is necessary to make the trans engage? The action of the trans is sluggish and doesnt seem to have a lot of power. Thanks

i own a MF 50a and i love these MF industrial stuff but when you said ATF fluid in trans ? as far as i know mine dosent have ATF in transmission i believe it is some kind of hydraulic fluid ? it is clear anyway . i think id check into that !!! a guy up the road has a MF 40 same type of transmission foot pedal no clutch and im almost positive he didnt use ATF when he changed his fluid either !! anyway phone MF to see what they advise ?

Chris, That,s what it had in it,but I wanted to be sure it was the correct fluid for it as I haven,t recieved my operator book for it yet so called the Massey Ferguson dealer here in Wa and he is the one who told me to use ATF without hesitation .He seemed to know these industrial backhoes very well so I figured it was the correct oil.Not sure of the arrangement forward of the gearbox,(if it,s a torque converter or a clutch pack) but in the case of a clutch pack I would think the high detergent would be the ticket as long as it,s compatible with any rubber that might be in the assembly. It seems to work like a dream and I get instant reverse motion and a nice crisp feel to the action. This old girl even has a heater in the cab(works)which is a first around my rust farm.

Have you tried to open the plug in the bottom to see how the oil looks like... or drop the filter on the left side of the engine, like a Multipower filter ? To see if the oil is black, or grey.

Bill ,Thanks for the advise,I ended up changing both the trans and torque converter housing oil as it was pink with new dextron, and backed off on the forward pedal adjustment and the trans came to life in forward and revers high and low gear so I,m a happy camper with my new 50A
