When I tried it the first time and it was set for about 3 inchs from the factory, it just pushed my tractor around.. I kept it in 1st gear and low..
I have like a black clay.. real hard stuff. Any Suggestions on how to stop from getting pushed??
If I push the clutch in it really pushes me..
I may just have to Plow first..

Mike from Illinois

Mike;

From the post that you made it sounds like you have a multi-power transmission in your 165 same as mine. The multi-power dosen't have any engine braking in the 'LOW' setting. You have to have the trans multi-power in 'HIGH'to hold back on the rototiller. I've got a Howard 80" on mine and it's plenty for the tractor even in the sandy loam that I have. I do use mine for breaking up the ground in the garden area. Good Luck.

Mine is a 60" and I have good soil.. even at that if things are a little wet it will use ALL the HP the 165 has to offer. The 60" is offset to starboard so it covers my tracks in one direction.

With a 72" tiller I think you'll have to take it easy. (as you have found out)

The SHALLOWER you till, the more push you get. When you get deeper the thrust from the tiller is somewhat 'balanced' by the dirt it's digging into.

Shallow it's just like another drive wheel. If I run out into the pasture and leave things down too far It will take off in pursuit of a new speed record.

Heavy black clay ? Whew !

i would also put weight on the front of the tractor. you might want to try different depths to see what works best. there are a lot of these tillers out there. they are used for primary and secondary tillage. no plowing neccessary! one of the things some fans of these like is that they "push" the tractor along.not so much of the pulling and jerking as when you plow with a moldboard. experiment with different tractor speeds,depths,and if this tiller is one of the better one's it will have different gears for the gear box so you can adjust the speed of the tiller too! hope this helps . good luck!!=)

Hi, I don't think a rototiller is made to use as a plow. I thought they were to brake up plowed ground or soft soil.

Check out the hp requirements for your tiller. A six footer sounds too big for a 165. If by chance the 165 is a big enough tractor, look at ways to add some weight to the tractor rear. Fluid filling the rear tires and adding wheel weights will improve your traction, and breaking up hard ground in front of a tiller is always helpful. David
