I am wanting advise on replacement of the timing advancer on the Cat 3208, I know the previous owner had the pump repaired and replaced by a reputable shop in town, but I know the engine is not running up to full rpm because the fuel timing is to late. Static timing seems almost late to me also, but after it warms up very little smoke... it has been cold here lately. My question is since this application is such a bearcat to get to since fan, hood, and or radiator is in the way, should I just plan on pulling the front cover off, and check and replace the advancer gear on camshaft, or should I take the notion that the reputable shop timed the engine correctly? Anyone know of rebuilders who supply this gear advancer. I have a used camshaft and gear that appears to be tight, can I somehow check the advancement if I chuck it into a lathe. I wish I knew with certainty that my used one was good, or I knew what a bad one was like for that matter. Ordered the gaskets this morning. Just wanting some advice, I feel the motor does not have that much blow by, just not running like it should, had the pan off and engine was super clean, just like to have the snap back that I know that they should have.

Why don't you start by checking the static timing???
