I'm assembling the brakes on my 65, and when I bolt down the differential carrier plate to the trumpet housing (10-12 lbs torque), it is almost impossible to turn the axle. This is with new actuator and disks.

I assume this is not normal, but I also don't see any way to adjust for it, other than sanding down the brake disks, which I assume I should not have to do. Do the disks contact the actuators and brake surfaces on the axle housing all the time?

Hi, unusual problem this. Have you had the discs relined? Normally disc thicknesses are standard so should not cause any problems. The discs would not be in permanent contact from the point of view of wear and heating. Is the actuator fully closed...no debris at the base of the ramps? Check that the actuator is free in the axle housing. There may be a rough edge on the new actuator that is causing it to jam in the housing.
Failing that, take it up with your disc supplier to check the thickness.

Hi Randy -

This might be a stupid question, but is the nut on the actuator rod free? And not pulling the rod out to expand the operating assembly?

(please don't ask me why that was the first thing that came to my mind!!!!!)

Does anyone know how thick the disks should be?

Hi,
No info of mine gives the thickness but your brake re-line shop should know.

Looked at both actuators again, and not only is the "new" actuator thicker than the one I rebuilt, but it is uneven across the actuator, making it thicker to one side by over 1/16 of an inch. I can't find any issues with the balls setting in or other obvious issues, so my only guess is faulty machining to start with.

The old one fits and works as it should. Instead of buying a new one by mail order, I'll probably go the massey dealer and see if theirs matches my old model better.
