I own a MasseyHarris 44 gas tractor. It has a Zenith carb and it wont run. It used to run until it quit and backfired. Now it wot start and I got two other carbs to try and gas pours out of the hole on the bottom of them when u turn the tractor over usually when you use the choke. It fires and backfires but it wont run. I need to know how to set the carb there isa screw on the top and one on the bottom. I would like to know how to set them so it will start and run again.

Ask yourself what has changed since the last time it ran.

You may have two problems; an ignition/timing problem (backfiring through the carb is sometimes caused by an overadvanced spark) and/or a problem with the float valve in the carb. First make sure that you have a fat, bluish white spark. If you do, then check the timing. If you don't check the primary ignition circuit and get it to make a fat, bluish white spark. Since it won't start, you'll have to get the #1 piston on the compression stroke and then line it up with the timing mark using a wrench to turn the engine to the timing point. Then remove the wire from the #1 plug and put a paper clip or a bent wire in the boot and hold it near a good ground. Loosen the distributor and turn on the key switch. Holding the #1 plug wire with the paper clip in it near a good ground, rotate the distributor slowly back and forth til you hear the spark snap. At that point you are statically timed. You'll have to do this several times to get the right point and when you do, tighten down the distributor being careful not to move it from your established timing point.
Now try a start. If it is still flooding and won't start and you have the correct timing AND a fat bluish white spark, then I'sd suspect the float in the carb maybe the problem.
Do these check systematically and record the results so you can analyze the situation and get to the root cause of your problem. Swapping parts hoping to find the problem is a poor way to do this and is also expensive.

TRA:

This is NOT a timing problem.

It sounds like you need to bebuild your carb(s). Either the float valve is not sealing properly or the float has developed a leak and filled with gasoline. Should be a simple fix.

could be a open float valve causing it to flood. It could be fouled plugs or ignition problems. However, it sounds like it may have jumped time.
