I am restoring a 1960 MF65 with Perkins Diesel. I took the outer planetary drives into the Massey dealer to get outer seals installed. Got the drives back and they sat for awhile before I put them back on. When I did they won"t fit all the way down on the axle housing and have a gap of about 1/8" and won"t bolt down all the way. I thought they may have put too many shims in when they reassembled, but when I took the drives apart they now don"t have any shims in them at all below the bearing cone. Otherwise they look like my shop and parts manual say they should. What I"m wondering is if they didn"t pull the outside cone bearing all the way back against the split ring if that would explain why I can"t get all the way down.

Hi, I can not understand this. If it is properly assembled it should be possible to be as much as 1/8" too much.
I did mine in august, and I did everything myself, and it works fine now. Did you let them replace the axial bearing too ? Because, I used 6,5 mm rollers instead of the original 1/4" rollers and I had the cone and bearing ring on the other side surfaced, so the increase in roller thickness did not matter.

Randy,

The 1/8" gap you are talking about should be a .001 to .005 gap to get the correct preload on the axle. When I had the seals replaced (retired Massey mechanic) I took the complete axle assembly to the shop. They can"t determine the proper shims for the required preload unless they have all the components. I guess if you had checked the axle end-play before disassembly and had determined that the preload was OK they could have put the original shims back in. I had new bearings put in so the mechanic had to reshim to get the correct preload. It sounds like there must be a bearing or a race that is not seated properly as you said.

In the shop manual they say to pull the Cone Bearing all the way back against the split ring retainer when you reassemble it. Seems to me if you didn't do that, the whole axle assembly would stick out too far towards the trumpet housing and you would have a gap when you reassembled it. The dealer's take was that the bearing would re-seat properly when you bolted it together, but it doesn't seem right to force it that way. Besides it doesn't match the shop manual. They also insisted I didn't need shims, but I don't see any configuration that doesn't require shims in my manuals.

I came to think of one thing. Yes, it is two types of this planetary gear. One has 3 tapered bearings, and one has only 2 tapered bearings and 1 combined axial roller bearing/radial needles. If you have the one with the combined axial roller/radial needles and you turn the axial roller bearing washer the wrong way around it will not seat properly and you might get about 1/8" "preload" instead of the .001-.005" prelead. Just a thought.

By the way, you don't need any special tools to disassemble it to find out if the outer bearing is tight against the split bearing.

Randy,

I may be getting in over my head here because, as I said before, I hired a retired Massey mechanic to do this job. I wanted to do it myself but I did not have the correct pullers and also didn't have a hydraulic press. The service manual I have is one I bought through a Massey dealer. It shows two different planetary assemblies, an early style and a late style. You have the early style if your tractor is a low clearance model and the serial is #662236 or less.(you probably already know this) Anyway, my manual also says to press the bearing against the split ring. It says this needs to be done so you can later determine how thick the shims need to be. I agree , it seems at least some shims will be required on both versions of planetaries.

I don't think your dealer was looking at the same manual I am when he said it wouldn't need any shims.

Well, these had shims when I took them in, and from what I can tell came back built differently than when I too them in. The Dealer commented the two units were different when they took them apart, so I suppose in trying to make them match the shims went away.

I have the newer style planetary with all the roller bearings. I'm going to try to pull the Bearing up against the split ring and see if that allows me to assemble this and set the preload. I've ordered new shims, assuming I'll need them to set it correctly, but in the meantime if I could just get it to go together, it would be nice.
