STP sells a lead substitute available at NAPA When I tried it in my MF202 I thought it quieted it down. Probably just my imagination but it didn"t cost much so it seems worthwhile.

the old engines run just fine without adding anything-----if u must, do as i do and add a handful of lead shot in the gas tank (use the big balls - buy them at K-Mart, use the ones for powder muskets- there large and won"t clogg anything---they disolve extremly slow- and as there rolling around in the bottom of the tank prevent rust from forming----good luck---john

you can buy a lead substitute gas additive, and i've been told that a little transmission fluid in the gas can also work to help lube the valves and whatever. i don't know how well either of these work, if at all. what about "marvel mystery oil"? (if you've ever heard of it) i know that it's s'pose to lube the upper cyls. and heads...tho i've never tried it in my tractor i used to use it all the time in my car.

You can toss bbs into the tank. Won't affect the fuel though they might tend to clog the screen. The "lead" in fuel was Tetraethyl Lead a liquid. It may have deposited something like metalic lead when burned.

But if you aren't running the vintage engine pulling a plow 500 hours a year, you aren't going to cause significant valve wear and with using unleaded fuel you also won't be fouling plugs or the air you breathe. Lead ingested has a tendency to kill brain cells.
