165 continental- spin on filters?

Does anybody know of any spin on adapters for the Continental engines? I know they're available for the Perkins, but I don't think I've ever seen one for a continental. There's nothing wrong with our current canister, I'd just rather not have to deal with as much of a mess when the time comes to change the oil.

The other way I could go, would be to make one up myself since I work in a machine shop, so if anyone had the dimentions handy I could possibly make a few and sell them after I test one on our own tractor first. I could figure something out by removing the filter and playing with it, but that wouldn't be till the next change some time in spring or summer.

Sparex has them. Go to a dealer for Sparex and you can order one.

That topic comes up here repeatedly. One post a couple of years ago was: http://www.ytmag.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=ferg&th=37048

There have been several posts. Search this forum or the Ferguson forum for oil filter conversion for more opinions.

I don't find the canister filter any messier than the screw on filter would be and I have an ample supply of filter elements for the canister. Getting the canister to not leak does take a bit of care with the gasket and making sure the canister goes in the hole in the block without catching a side. Its no different that it was on my dad's first new car, a 1954 Ford. And if something was to bash at the canister, like a stump or limb, the canister would stand up to a lot more abuse than a modern screw on filter made of heavy steel foil.

The main thing is that this one has a loader frame on it and it can be kinda difficult to get a wrench of a ratchet in there to remove the canister. That also means that it would take a heck of a lot of bad luck for something to come up at just the right angle to actually get the filter and poke it open. The only time I've ever had a problem getting the canister to seal was with one from MF. I took it off, stretched out the gasket some, and stuffed it back in and it didn't leak one bit after that. I normally just go to the local auto parts house because they're a little closer and the filters are just as good, if not better (Hastings). We also have an Oliver 1855 w/ canister type (can't just switch bases because of the oil cooler). That one really makes a mess, but so do the other filters on different ollies because they're all upright on the engine, instead of downward or to the side like most other makes.

I only see the conversions for the Perkins 165's on this site, and that's all the dealer really shows for the 165 also. I do see them for the 135's though, and I do know of 1 135 that has a spin on filter on it in the neighborhood. I'm kinda wondering if that same conversion kit would work on the 165. I'm guessing it would because the canisters and filters are the same as far as I know....

Go read the post I linked. The original poster said specifically the MF adapters worked for 135 and 165 using Continental engines.

In the post I saved off line Big Dean said:
> Massey Ferguson does not have a kit for that but > a dealer can order the parts you need to switch > to a spin-on filter. These are Massey Ferguson > part numbers
> Continental Z134, Z145 & G178 Spin on filter > parts
> 1051113m1 adapter
> 1051114m1 stud (plate)
> 1051115m1 gasket (o ring)
> 1069954m91 filter

I had a loader on my MF-135 but it opened up the space by the oil filter when raised, the best I remember. I moved the loader to a larger tractor so access on my 135 is quite easy.

Cockshutt used them on the F124/F140 and F162 Continentals. The F124/F140 is used in the model 20 tractor and the F162 is used in the model 540 tractor. The same filter is used on the Oliver 60. The Fleetguard number is LF571 or the Wix number is 57011.
