I have a 1963 massey with the front end loader, no PS, tough to steer. Anybody converted theirs to PS, woundering the expense and effort.

Thanks,
Kerry

I am in the process of doing a conversion to hydraulic steering.

Pulling out the ball screw and making a cover for the steering box.

Getting a hydraulic steering valve off a combine and mounting it under the dash.

Using a hydraulic cylinder mounted off the front axle to a steering rod. One side for know and if any problems will put one on each side. (leaving the gears in the steering box to keep alignment)

Can use a GM sawgna pump of a truck or a priority valve on the loader hydraulics.

This should work and will let you know. I have been thinking about it for a long time.

I've looked into it a little bit for a Ferguson F-40, which is same size tractor as MF 50. It was very expensive, around $1,000 for parts as I recall. The pump eats up your pocketbook. If price is the major consideration, it's probably cheaper to get another tractor for the job at hand.

it sure would help if you could give out the model of your tractor

NC:

This can be done using salvage parts but, as others have already said, it will be expensive unless you can find a cheap parts tractor with PS to part out out.

The PS unit in your 35 is integral with the steering gear/transmission cover and this will need to be changed. Many of the used ones are worn out and/or leaking.

I do not know what type of pump your gasoline 35 uses as both of my 35s are Perkins diesels. Some pumps are readily available and expensive but some are harder to find.

You might check with Jackson Power Steering. They make aftermarket PS kits for many models of tractor. Perhaps they make one for the 35. The link follows:

Thanks to everyone, I will check it out. The 35 is a good running unit, the tube frame on the loader makes it a little akward to get on and off. Front tire pressure sure has to be maintained with no PS. Kerry

The power steering on my MF-135 helps but its not as powered as the hydraulic steering by pipe on my JD-4020.

I ran my MF-135 with broken power steering for a couple years. It helped to have oversize front tires with not much depth of tread. I went to 11L-16 wagon tires. They didn't make ruts that had to be broken out of to turn when not moving. They had to be on 8" wide rims. I have 11.00-16 on those rims on the 4020 now and have that MF-236 loader on the 4020 because it was too much loader for the 135.

MF wanted $495 for the steering piston and cylinder assembly. A machine shop fixed it for much less.

To add PS you may be able to use the main steering gear but will need the upright shaft with the valve, plus the cylinder, hoses, and pump. Might cost more than the tractor cost.
