I have a 1966 MF 165 gas that I bought this past summer. I hasn't really run well since I got it (rough, no power) so this morning I put on new: points, condensor, rotor, distributor cap, plugs, wires and ignition coil. When I pulled the old plugs 3 of the 4 were completely bridged with carbon! I was quite surprised to find that it didn't run any better with new parts than with the old. I then checked the timing and it averages about 20 degrees. I say "averages" because it's all over the place!
Questions: 1. I know nothing about points & condensor ignitions so please excuse the stupid question - is the points gap supposed to be 0.020(the guage that came in the kit is .020) when the points are opened or closed? I set them at 0.020 open.
2. could the timing be erratic because the distributor gear or cam gear is worn?

If it's a 66, I'm pretty sure it should have the continental, right?

According to the operator's manual, it should be "6 deg. BTDC with the engine idleing at 450 rpm. The max advance is 27 deg. btdc w/ the engine running at 2000 rpm no load.

The distributor could have worn bushings or just plain be worn, but the manual lists several other reasons as well:

Eractic Misfire-
Dirty carburator
weak or broken valve springs
sticking valves
faulty ignition

Loss of power also points to a dirty or mis adjusted carb, faulty ignition, as well as a few other things.

I always see operators manuals for 165's on ebay, and that's where I got mine for under $15. I also just purchased a parts manual from ebay, still waiting for it to get here.

You gapped the points correct.

Fireing order for both Perkins and Continental engines is 1-3-4-2.
