Some of those are the F-226, same as used in Kaiser, Frazier, Jeep, Hyster, Towmotor, Oliver Cletrac, Clark, and many other industrial applications. That thing you are talking about is a water distribution tube. It goes from front to rear, and has small distribution holes (about 1/4 inch) along it to send cooling water from the water pump to specific points, such as exhaust port/guide areas. When they rust out, you don't get as good of cooling. To remove them, you take a small hook and pull them out. Right - this only works when everything is new and shiny. If you can find a new one, they just push in. If it is rusted out, you'll want to remove the expansion plugs on the side of the block and dig out the crud too. TH\hanks for making me dig into my foggy memory!

It is a water ditribution tube that slides in behind the water pump. They tend to corode after time. They are replaceable, although they can be tough to pull out (rust). The early ones were brass the, later ones are steel. Ther are 2 different lengths depending on the engine displacement.
