I have the basics of this tractor, am wondering what experiences others may have/had. How is the 248 diesel? Parts available? Any bad history? Thanks for the help!

I have a 1983 MF-690. Can't get to my manual right now, but I think it has the 248 in it. Has 67 PTO HP, 4 cyl, either the 248 or 236. This one has been excellent. Sips fuel at average of 1.3 gallons per meter hour. Mine has cab/h/a 12 speeds F, 4 speeds R, independent PTO, twin remotes, cat 2 3-point, weight 8000 lbs. Tom

Hi,
Like nearly all engines fitted to MF's since 1959 (3 cyl 35) the 248 is an excellent engine for reliability, starting and ease of maintenance. Spares (if needed) should not be a problem. It is smooth and responsive and will give good service with the correct maintenance. Would recommend checking the tappets as this is something that tends to be ignored on most tractors almost from new.
regards
DavidP
