We have a 47 pony with a lot of play in the final gear on both sides. I have taken the cap of the bearing on the outside of the drive shaft that goes to the little gear. I have taken off the c clip and can move the bearing but it doesn't want to come out. Is it possible that it is holding on by a birr or is something else holding it in place. I would like to look at the little gear to see what can be done about the play.
Thanks,
John

Just take a puller and put two 3/8" bolts and push shaft out of bearing. Then you can remove shaft and gear. Had to replace oneset of gears in my pony last winter.

Larry, I did not understand the part about adding the two 3/8 bolts. I have removed the cap covering the end of the drive shaft. I see the end of the drive shaft and the drive shaft support bearing. I am able to pull the support bearing out about .25 inches then it will not come out any further. I have put a puller on the ring that is attached to the bearing. the purpose of this ring is to stop the bearing from moving in towards the differential. There is not much meat to grab so I have only put a small amount of pressure on the ring in an attempt to pull the bearing out. Is it likely caught on a burr? Or is there something else holding it from coming out?

thanks for your help
John

Take a crankshaft pulley puller and screw the 2 3/8" bolts into the tappings where you removed the cover. Then with the puller push the shaft out of the bearing towards the differential. Then you can remove the bearing and drive gear

There is a snap ring on the end of the shaft that has to come off.

Thank you, I understand! There is enough room for the drive shaft to be pushed towards the differential to clear the bearing?

You have to take the axle assembly off of the transmission before you can remove the axle shaft. I had to replace the axle shaft, drive gear, and driven gear along with bearings and seals. Also loosen the brake band. It is also a good time to check your brake bands.

I had hoped not to get into it that deep. I replaced the brake bands last year and this is just the routine winter servicing. Oil, Trans fluid etc. I was hoping that there would be enough free travel of the axle shaft to use your method without removing the whole final drive from the diffential. Oh well maybe those gears won't get reversed this year.
