Hello folks it's me again. I'm the one who bought the ferguson 40 that I had queried about earlier in this forum. Well as of today I am totally stumped and need your help. I had looked at all the pictures of ferguson 40 in the archives but non ogf them look exactly like mine. The hoods are the same but the stance is alot taller. My hood stands five feet from the ground and I have 38 inch tires on the back. No this is not where someone has put a pair of 38 one the tractor because the parts tractor also has 38 spin outs. Can this 40 be a high crop. Is there a letter designation in the serial number for high crop. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. THank you

The letters R and C will denote the Hi-Archs in the serial number.

what Aaron says is the way it is the F40 was a copy of the MH 50, paint scheme was the big difference we have both and they are standard versions a little diff. in sheet metal and look a lot alike and are both good tractors you will spend a lot of money if you start to restore your tractor we have done both of ours and after the first one I no longer kept the bills!!

The proper term is "High Arch", not high crop.

There is nothing wrong with your F-40,It is just that there were more M-H50sHi.Crop sold than F-40s.They had 11-38s or (12.4-38s) on as standard. There is no serial diff.as far as I know of.

My book on Masey Harris Ferguson states that during the two line policy years 1955-57/8 that MH dealers got the MH50 and the fergie dealers where wanting a row crop tractor as well. The decision was made to rebadge the MH50 as a F-40. Oddly the standard versions seemed to be more plentiful yet the birth of the model was based on the high crop model. I am going to reread that chapter to see if I missed anything.

Let's go Mountaineers,

Aaron
