Hello Guys,

How strong should be the battery for my MF 165 diesel , to start easily when it is very cold weather... Mine is running good when it is nice weather, but I noticed that if I miss one starting, on the second try, the battery is too weak... and I need to use an external chargeur. So my battery is charging on the tractor 14.48 Volts and after running it stays between 12.30 Volts and 12.15 Volts. So the regulator "cutoff" is working good and the generator too.
What is your feeling and what should be the more efficient battery to use it in cold weather ?

Thanks for your advices. Jicarre

Hello,
Hope to be able to give you the battery specifications tomorrow. Is your engine heater working? Don't be afraid to use it in moderately cold weather, that's what it's there for.

Hello DAVE,

Thanks, I had no time to verify my powersteering because, I could not start my engine this morning...
So I have no idea of what is the heater engine is : i think I do not have one. When is dificult to start, I use the "start pilot" starting fluid. I find it not very serious to start, and probably not so good for the engine. I do not know if I have the engine heater and how to verify my MF is fit with ?
Thanks. Jicarre

Good morning,
If you look at the right hand side of the engine (as you sit in the seat) you will see the inlet manifold just under the line of the bonnet. It is a long 'box' with a rubber hose attached to the front. Going to this box should be an electrical cable and a metal fuel pipe. If you do not have a heater fitted, (according to my parts book, there are no exceptions) there may just be a hexagon plug fitted.
Assuming that you have a heater fitted, turn the key to the 'Heat' position and if it is working you should feel the inlet manifold around the Thermostart begin to warm up. So far so good. The engine should now start if everything is OK.
A 1966 UK 165 should have an AD4.203 engine with the exhaust on the left hand side. It is a 4 cylinder version of the engine fitted to the 135. These engines should easily start in all conditions so there may be a further problem, fuel injectors, pump, poor starter or cranking speed.
After the engine has started and warmed thoroughly and before starting next time remove the thermostart. If the coil inside it is wet with diesel then it is leaking. If it is dry black that is OK. If it is leaking the inside of the manifold may well be wet with fuel. When the engine does start there may be a lot of white smoke.
You mention using 'Start Pilot' fluid. I have a recollection of seeing this system somewhere but to the best of my knowledge is not fitted to any UK models.
Hope this will help.
David

Hi DAVID,

We are now in the NEW Year 2007...
"FIRMIN" Started good this morning !
As I was feeding the farmyard animals, I tried to start FIRMIN... First I checked all around the engine for the manifold and the heating system you told me... I never found the system, so I turn the ignition key to the right during 20 or 30 sec... and then to the left and the engine started on the first try without any difficulty.
I am pretty sure, it will not be difficult to start him the very next times... I thank you very much for your precious assistance and I still waiting for your informations concerning the battery MF 165 mod UK 1996. MANY THANKS YOU AGAIN!
J'ai apprci ! Jicarre

Hi DAVID,

I just came back home, and we wait for New Year 2007, it is now 2240 Hrs. I am happy you are replying so fast. I need to verify all you tell me. I do not know yet about the heater engine. But I noticed already, the white smoke while starting. I do not know about the starter... Before starting, when the engine is cold, I active five or six times the lever of the fuel pump (Is that good ?)I am doing this in order to bring the diesel to the ignition place and my feeling I pump too much : How to know if the diesel is on the right place in the right quantity ? Tomorrow I will observe around the engine, and I will find that hearter engine. Do you know something about the battery I need to use. The battery on the tractor is quite old and it seems also too weak to suffer several starting engine when it is cold. Spend an Happy New Year eve and I will listen to you pretty soon !
I wish an Happy New Year to everybody on this marvellous forum ! Jicarre

Bonsoir Jicarre,
Operating the lift pump prior to starting will not normally assist starting if the system is working OK. The first turn of the engine should produce enough output from the lift pump to 'pressurize' the low side of the system. You cannot pump too much as you might with a petrol engine.
As far as the battery is concerned, the capacity is 96 Amps per (sur) hour. The type is a 663 which your battery supplier would be able to cross reference if they use different numbers. 100 Series tractors use only 2 batteries in temperate conditions. The low (basse) type fitted to the 35/135 etc and the tall (haute) fitted to the 165/175 etc. If you change the battery, check the position of the terminals so that your cables will reach.
If you have seen white smoke, then locate the thermostart and remove it and check the coil for being wet. Is your ammeter showing a good charge when the engine is running?
Bon Annee
DavidP
