I'm looking at a 1962 MF 35, 4 cylinder gas, runs ok, uses some oil with heavy use, new rear tires, new clutch and transmission seal, recent new core in radiator, good sheet metal, in need of major cleaning and paint. What would be a fair price?

I went to a auction two weeks ago to bid on a 1970 MF 135, 3cyl gas, diff. lock, power steering, 1032 hours. Tractor looked great. I didn't get a bid in. Went for $ 4700 plus a 10% buyers fee. Central Ohio

Depends on where you live. I am near Austin, Texas, my 1965 MF 135 with new Grass tires cost me $2800, the 1962 MF 35 with new tires all around cost $2400. Each were bought at Auction, both are in good shape.

The $3500 figure sounds like a reasonable ballpark. For that you can expect a pretty good machine. Two years ago I paid $3400 CDN for a 1960 35 with Perkins diesel. It had one good back tire. The others have been replaced over the last two years but that expense and a set of brake shoes have been about it for repairs in 200 hours of intermittent but valuable service.

It depends on a number of things. You might want to do a comprezssion test(145 # at sea level), check for bubbles in the rad with the cap off and motor running, check the distributor shaft for worn bushings(try to move it sideways), separately test the left and right brakes, look for oil leaks at the clutch housing by pulling down a thin plate held on by 4 bolts under the clutch housing, and oil leaks at the pto shaft and rear wheels, check for water in the tranny oil(it will be milky brown if water present), maybe try to put a load on it and check for clutch slippage and smooth engine operation and bearing knock, make sure hydraulics work and don't leak bown too fast after engine shut down(should stay up for a few minutes), check for loose front wheel bearings, loose steering, engine oil pressure(20 is ok).
Check the engine oil for a gassy smell, unless the guy changed it just before you looked at it, in which case beware.
If all that is ok, maybe $3500, roughly.
But I could be off a bit.

it all depends

my BIL bot well used 35 with very nice working loader for $3500, he looked for almost 3 years

also consider a 135, not to knock the 35 but power steering is nice
